It’s a day like most others: you wake up, check Facebook, and as you’re scrolling, you see that one of your friends has shared a link to an article titled something along the lines of "50 Tips All Girls Should Follow." So, of course, you decide to check it out. The tips range from things like "Start every morning at 8 a.m." to "Make time to read for fun" to "journal daily" to "always keep fresh fruit in your house."
Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of these tips. In fact, they’re all wonderful things to implement into your daily life! But, if you’re anything like me, meaning that on the weekend your morning is lucky to start by 10, and the only fresh fruit you come across is the fruit you steal from the dining hall, these tips that are meant to inspire can often times leave you reminded of how much of you don’t have it together at all.
Reading these kinds of articles, it’s easy to get down on yourself, but so often, we forget the beauty of the journey—the journey we take on the way to becoming someone that has the money to keep fresh fruit in the house and the time to read for fun.
Part of college and young adulthood is not having it all together. Your whole life isn’t going to be eating ramen noodles out of an old crusty pot with all five of your roommates. On one hand, you might be thinking to yourself "thank God," but on the other hand, this is a time to enjoy the shambles that your life is in (as silly as that sounds).
By all means, implement healthy habits, but if you just cannot find the time to journal every day or start every morning with a sun salutation, don’t beat yourself up! We are all on our own beautiful journey of self-discovery and adulthood, so enjoy that journey! Enjoy 2 a.m. dance party study breaks, Saturday morning spent sleeping till noon, and setting a timer to take a seven-minute nap because you are just that exhausted. These are days and memories you’ll never get back, so live in the moment and enjoy the journey!
