WARNING: There are spoilers!
If you are a female between the ages of 18 and 54, you have probably fan girl'd over Meg Ryan since the life changing year of 1989. In that year the soon to be phenomenon, Billy Crystal, teamed up with the spunky and lovable Ryan and produced what would stand the test of time as greatest romantic comedy to ever be created.
In the beginning you are already hooked by the charming young looks of a college graduate Harry Burns aka Crystal. This young appearance of a 41-year-old Crystal is much attributed to the make up artists and good lighting. Additionally, the witty banter exchanged between Sally Albright (Ryan) and Harry is what attracts the audience almost instantly. A hopeful journalist Ryan and a cynical law student Crystal prove to be an awful pairing for a road trip from the University of Chicago to New York City. Furthermore, the hairstyles of these late 80's trendsetters, truly brings meaning to the phrase “time has been good to us".
After a number of run-ins, Harry and Sally decide officially to begin a friendship together. Both characters have lost loves--Harry has recently divorced and Sally is much too all right with her recent break up. Towards the middle of the film you will come across the scene wherein which Sally and Harry belt out karaoke in the coolest gift store to ever be seen on screen. The two sing Surrey with the Fringe on Top from the musical Oklahoma. Though the song is abruptly interrupted by an appearance from Harry's ex wife, there is just enough singing for you to realize how adorable Ryan's attempt at singing is, and that there is a true connection between these two “friends".
Shortly after this scene, there is a bit of a lull where the relationship takes a halt and both attempt to date other people. I recommend a snack break at this point in the film because neither relationship lasts. Sally and Harry attempt to set up their two best friends, Jess and Marie, with one another, but the friends end the night with each other instead.
After Sally finds out her long time ex has become engaged, she has the post break up melt down the audience and Harry have waited for all movie. This event ends up being just enough to push the two together, but not for long. Then come a serious of awkward run-ins and a nasty fight at Jess and Marie's wedding that causes the two to quit speaking.
Finally, Harry realizes on New Years Eve that he is not only lost without the friendship, but without Sally as a whole. Crystal sprints through the streets of New York, which are surprising empty for New Years Eve, and runs all the way to the party to profess his love to Ryan. The speech is probably one you have seen quoted on line because it is so appropriately iconic. At the end, you see a final monologue where they tell the tail of their wedding, and you will leave the film feeling ultimately at peace with the world.
