What To Do When Nothing Goes Your Way

Piecing life together when it starts to fall apart.

What To Do When Nothing Goes Your Way
Alain Laboile

Once I reached high school, severe migraines were a somewhat regular part of my life. My high-endurance legs, once my pride and joy, started to wear down from my daily soccer games and training sessions. Even worse, my quick-thinking brain, which I considered to be another hallmark of my identity, didn't seem to always problem-solve on command as I had become accustomed to.

At the time, I wasn't self-aware enough to have too much concern about where my life was headed, but each of these issues wore on me in their own separate ways. It was like I was in quicksand; simply put, I wasn't living the life I wanted to live. While these problems wore on throughout my high school experience, I never stopped to give them much thought and so it wasn't until the end of my senior year that I was able to make a change.

As it turned out, it was all about the little things. My diet and sleep schedule were terrible and my all-around self-care practices were practically nonexistent. But to me, I was just living a normal life. Now if you're already self-aware about these things, you may think you have nothing to take away from this. But really I think there is a valuable overall lesson to be taken away from my misguided lifestyle.

After I finally took the time to do my research, I fixed my diet, got better sleep and improved my oral hygiene, among other things. Really, those are the types of practices that I stand by today when things start to go wrong.

Of course there will always be times where it seems nothing is going right, where we get the feeling that we've lost control of our lives. Under those circumstances, it's easy to lose your way and constantly question what to do next. But during those times, there's only one simple answer: control the things you actually can control.

That means eating healthy and staying hydrated. It means planning your day accordingly so you can sleep enough to keep yourself sane. It means listening to music or doing whatever it is that makes you feel relaxed. It means doing whatever you can to give yourself something to feel good about, even if that's just whitening your teeth or trying a new hairstyle.

All these little things may seem largely insignificant in the grand scheme of our lives. But really when you pay them special attention, they can have a permeating impact on the big things.

“Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don't.” -Steve Maraboli

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
