How To Deal With Writer's Block

Writing about not knowing what to write about.

How To Deal With Writer's Block
9 Bridges

This week I sat down to write my article, a day late and an idea short. I've loved writing for "Odyssey" and getting my thoughts, ideas, and humor out there. But this week I just couldn't think of something worth sharing. To be perfectly honest, it is a beautiful day where I live in Maine and the beach is calling my name, but I'm sitting in my room trying to think about something to share with my audience. So, I thought I would share some ideas on what to do to clear your head when you have writer's block. Writer's block comes and goes but sometimes it sticks around longer than we wish it would.

1. Maybe try to go for a run, but try not to think about what you have yet to write or you'll end up on the ground like TSwift.

Running is not only a great way to exercise and get some cardio in, it's also a great way to clear your head.

2. Ask a friend for some help.

"Help me. I have an article due today and I don't know what to write about." Even if they don't give you the perfect article idea, they can definitely help get those gears in your head moving.

3. Watch a few episodes on Netflix and come back to it later.

This is probably what led you to your situation in the first place, so limit your binge-watching to two episodes. Who knows? This may just be the best thing for your writer's block.

4. Stare at the wall until an idea appears.

This may or may not work, but it's worth a shot. You never know until you try.

5. Eat a snack.

Is there a problem that a bag of chips can't solve? You can never eat just one, or two, or the whole bag.

6. Eliminate distractions.

If you're like me then you probably open your phone every 10 minutes and scroll through Instagram or text. Unfortunately this only makes the problem worse, so, sadly, you need to put your phone away.

7. Change your environment.

Or be like these people and buy one of these type-while-walking contraptions that allow you to write while you're at the grocery store or going for a walk or something really weird like that.

8. Don't give up.

Don't give up on the article you're supposed to write.

It's ok to feel stuck when you need to write about something different each week. Don't be afraid to reach out and ask for help if you've been staring at your computer screen for a long period of time. And if none of these solutions work, then you can always just write about not knowing what to write about like I just did.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
