I know, I usually write about sports, but the events that have occurred this past week have motivated me to address this.
You may not be happy with the outcome of the election, as many others aren't. You may be upset that the person you wanted to win didn't. It is totally understandable as to why people would be disappointed. What is not understandable is people rioting in the streets and destroying property in protest of Trump being elected.
Newsflash: no matter how much you whine and complain about how much you hate him, this is reality. That reality is not going to change by people blocking highways and burning the American flag. We as a nation have to accept the fact that Trump is our next president.
You don't have to like him, but you should do your best to support him. Think of it this way, if you don't support him, it's like you're on a plane with the rest of America and you're hoping that the pilot crashes. It's impossible for America to move forward if it is divided the way it is.
No matter who you voted for, you walked into the polling station and voted based on who was going to help the country progress. That mindset shouldn't have changed since then, even if your candidate didn't get elected, you should still want the country to progress. That isn't going to happen if everyone is complaining and protesting about who was elected.
Now, I'm not a Trump supporter, I'll be honest — I do not like him. However, I want what's best for the country, so I support him. He may lose that support down the line, but for now, we should all give him a chance.
Also, for people who think he is going to do whatever he wants and run wild, that isn't reality. America has a system, and Congress isn't just going to sit back and let him make horrible decisions. That's not to say Trump can't still do stupid things, but until the day comes when he does as president (if that day comes), everybody just needs to calm down.
There has been a thing going around on social media mostly that if you voted for Trump that you are a racist, hate women, condone sexual assault, etc. No, just because you voted for who you wanted to vote for doesn't mean that you are all of these things. However, it would be false to say that some Trump supporters voted for him because of his stance on minorities and women. There are countless videos at Trump rallies of people saying that they support Trump because of his stance on these things. That being said, it is unfair to say that everybody who voted for him are all of these things.
Many countries aren't as lucky as we are, and the way someone gets to be in charge is you walk into a palace and shoot someone in the head, bring a general, and say they run the place now. Be grateful that we actually have some say in who represents us.
So come on America, stand together and move forward. No matter how you feel about the president, you should want what is best for all of us. A divided country isn't good for anybody, so stay clear-headed and let's improve our country.
