It it hard for you to avoid distraction? Do you find yourself needing to know what is going on in the world and by that definition we mean, what is going on online? Sometimes it can seem as though the world is rooting against you. All the good television shows start when the semester starts and they go on break when we all going in break. Besides the top 3 social media apps, there seems to be a new one popping up everyday. There are several apps that you use to talk to the same people whom you already talk to on all the other apps.
There are notifications, pop ups and alerts. These act like ads that pop up in the web browser when your online except it is in real life. People need a constant update of what is always going with their friends, strangers and the world. You can call it, "social media-ing."
The Urban dictionary defines it as: The act of going on social media websites or one single social media website.
What exactly is "social media-ing?" This is the word we will be using from now on. This is when you haven't moved from a particular spot for about 30 minutes because you are too busy checking Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and all your Snapchat stories. When you're done with that, you move on to clicking the top trending stories.
How do you figure out what is trending?
While you were checking Instagram, you noticed all the memes making fun of something or someone. For example, When Donald Trump said Corinthians Two, instead of Second Corinthians. That is when you noticed the hash tag trending on Twitter. Finally there were several videos on Facebook and a Snapchat story at the event. That's is a lot, but you are not done until it has been about 2 hours later and you think you have got all the information that has been shared and hash-tagged into the universe.
You have officially been "social-mediaing." It has officially become an action verb. Please don’t do this while driving, walking or learning. It can be dangerous or make you antisocial. If you find yourself at the club on college night and your battery is completely dead by the time it is time for you to request a Uber, then you have engaged in this activity.
It sounds funny but in 2016 it is becoming a fact. Here is a great suggestion to avoid the distractions and the notifications. Cut off your phone, when you go to class and social functions. People like to use the excuse, “There might be an emergency” but we all know that has about a 3% chance of being the truth. Here is your challenge for the new year. When you want to tell your friends what you are doing, go find them and let them know. When you want to know what is going on in the word, go buy a news paper. See how this works for you.
Do you think that you can go on a "social-mediaing" diet for a week? Month? A year?
