With election season heating up quickly, there are many opinions, choice quotes, and bad PR surrounding the candidates. It is easy at all ages, but especially as young adults using social media, to take these 'opinions' as they are. With the college age population being comprised of over 20,000,000 people, our votes as young adults are very influential. And while some young adults are not responsible for taxes, are not interested in foreign policy, or maybe couldn't care less about issues here at home--the person that walks into the Oval Office in January of 2017 and takes the role of the president will affect our future. Here is what you really need to know about the presidential candidates:

Republicans
(Listed as they are currently ranked by Public Policy Polling--margin of error: +/- 3.9.
For the sake of brevity, only candidates that have above 3% are included.)
Donald Trump- 19%
The Standard "For" Argument:
He is not a politician, thus he does not feel the need to be politically correct. He will speak his mind freely and bring new ideas and tactics to the government. He has publicly stated he has a net worth of $10 billion, so clearly he knows how to make money--he could use that knowledge to help the U.S. get out of debt.
The Standard "Against" Argument:
He is not a politician, thus he does not feel the need to be politically correct. He will have no idea how to speak to our allies or our enemies overseas. Many think that if he can't shut his mouth during a debate, no way will he do so when he is president, and his goals are completely unrealistic. He has stated he 'cherishes' women, even though public record shows differently. Many say he has gone bankrupt, and doesn't know how to handle government money.
The Facts:
He is 69 years old and was born in Queens. He attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the CEO and President of The Trump Organization. Trump himself has never gone bankrupt, but there have been four of his various endeavors which have. Trump considered a run in 2012, but said he was "not ready to leave the private sector."
Scott Walker- 12%
The Standard "For" Argument:
He has dropped unemployment in Wisconsin and added a great number of jobs in Wisconsin since he took office. Many think this proves he has the ability to do the same for the United States. He has a lot of financial backing from big Republican donors, which will give him the funds needed to take down the Democratic nominee.
The Standard "Against" Argument:
He is backed greatly by 'big money' and has been called the "Koch Brother's greatest extremist." He is anti-unions and has worked to strip collective bargaining rights from teacher's unions. He wants to attack environmental protection, which will create huge job loss. He sliced funding for K-12 schools almost in half in Wisconsin, and many believe he will do the same with America, if elected.
The Facts:
He is the current Governor of Wisconsin and is 47 years old. He was born in Colorado Springs, CO, and attended Marquette University. He has worked with the American Red Cross and was the youngest person elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1993. He is also the only Governor to survive recall.
Ben Carson- 12%
The Standard "For" Argument:
He is very intelligent and led an extremely successful team as the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University, which many think shows he has the ability to bring a cabinet, and possibly both parties, together. Much like Trump, he is not a politician, so he could bring a new light to the government. He is seen as a common man, which makes him appeal to voters in a different way than many of the other candidates.
The Standard "Against" Argument:
He is a very intelligent man that is gifted in science and medicine, but many supporters and opposers have outwardly stated he does not have enough political experience to be the President of the United States. He has repeatedly confused foreign affairs in debates and interviews, which could show that he lacks key political knowledge. Many believe he is also so set in his religious views that he will be unable to put them aside if any decision he would need to make in office would counteract these views.
The Facts:
He is 63 years old and is from Detroit, MI. He earned his B.A. from Yale University and his M.D. from the University of Michigan School of Medicine. He was the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at John Hopkins Children's Center for almost thirty years, and was the first person to ever separate twins conjoined by their heads.
Jeb Bush- 11%
The Standard "For" Argument:
He is from a political family, thus he is deeply rooted in this field and has a high level of exposure to the office that no other candidate has. Because of this, many believe he has the highest opportunity for funding, which would be essential in a run against the Democratic nominee. He worked diligently as the Governor of Florida to reform healthcare and the education system as well as cut taxes.
The Standard "Against" Argument:
Bush wants healthcare to be moved to the private sector, and is a huge supporter of Common Core, an education standardizing system. He is a big fan of school choice or giving families non-public school options, such as charter schools. Many opposers have bluntly said 'America does not need another Bush in office; he will simply be influenced by his father and brother.'
The Facts:
This 62-year-old is the former Governor of Florida. He got his Bachelors degree at the University of Texas at Austin, but was raised in Midland, TX. He has not held public office since 2007, but has been on various committees ,including the National Constitution Center, of which he was the Board Chairman.
Carly Fiorina- 10%
The Standard "For" Argument:
She appeals to the woman dynamic that Hillary does, which could allow her to hold her own against the Democratic hopeful. She was the CEO of a huge corporation, which supporters believe shows she has had proper exposure to teamwork, management, and finances. She has also been a key consultant for many political campaigns, including John McCain's presidential campaign in 2008.
The Standard "Against" Argument:
She has never served in public office, and may not have enough exposure to the political world to be able to handle the Presidency. She lost a Senate race in California in 2010, which possibly shows that she may not be able to get support in large Democratic states that could be necessary to beat the Democratic nominee.
The Facts:
Currently 60 years old, Carly Fiorina is the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard. She is currently the Chair of the philanthropic organization Good360. She is from Austin, TX, and received her Bachelors degree at Stanford University, with her M.B.A. at University of Maryland, and her M.S. at MIT. She was the first woman to head a company in the Fortune Top 20.
Ted Cruz- 9%
The Standard "For" Argument:
Many have stated that he has done great things in Texas and has first-hand knowledge of the importance of our need for increased border protection. He has a vast history in the legal system, which supporters say not only shows he knows the laws but that he is fit to lead by them. He is young, which will bring in younger voters against his Democratic counterparts. He is running on a platform of transparency, which appeals to many strong government-opposed voters.
The Standard "Against" Argument:
He isn't from the United States--he is not a nationally born citizen, which is a constitutional requirement to be President. He is first-term Senator, so many believe that his lack of time in Congress would be limiting to his ability as President. He does not have enough support from big people in his party--some analysts believe he is using a run to spread his message and gain momentum with clear knowledge he will not gain the nomination.
The Facts:
He currently sits as the Junior Senator for the state of Texas. He is of Cuban descent, and is the first Latino to be elected a Senator in Texas. The 44-year-old is originally from Calgary, Canada, but has renounced his citizenship. He attended Princeton and Harvard University. He served as the Associate Deputy U.S. Attorney General and Solicitor General before pursuing a spot in Congress in 2013.
Mike Huckabee- 6%
The Standard "For" Argument:
He has had experience in politics as both the Lieutenant Governor and Governor of Arkansas. He has strong religious values, which makes him relatable to voters and leads many to believe he will have a moral presidency, if elected. He wants to impose a flat tax, which many people believe is what America needs to make the playing field level.
The Standard "Against" Argument:
His desire to make religion a cornerstone of American government is for some a conflict of the Separation of Church and State. He has made very strong statements on the Israeli conflict, which have left many offended and unsure of his ability to handle international relations, such as claiming that President Obama "will take the Israeli and march them to the door of the oven." He ran for the nomination before and lost--many believe this will simply be the same.
The Facts:
A former Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee is originally from Hope, AR. He is currently 59, and attended Ouachita Baptist University before pursuing his Masters at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was a pastor for 12 years in the 1980's and early 1990's, before becoming Lieutenant Governor and then Governor. Before making his run for presidency, he was a TV Show Host on Fox News.
Marco Rubio- 6%
The Standard "For" Argument:
He is youthful, which makes him appeal more to young adults, which could get him more of the young, stereotypically Democratic votes. He is very relatable to college-aged voters as he has also been burdened with large student debt. Many think he is a prime example of America being a melting pot, and although his parents immigrated, he still has a firm belief that immigration should be done legally.
The Standard "Against" Argument:
He is a first-time Senator, so similar to Cruz many people think he does not have a lot of experience in Congress. As Florida is a very influential electoral state, it is concerning that many of these 'hometown-votes' could go to Bush as they have both served the state. Rubio has publicly compared the pro-life movement to those of slavery and women's suffrage, which many perceived as insensitive.
The Facts:
A current U.S. Senator for the state of Florida, this 44-year-old is originally from Miami, Florida. He is one of three Latinos currently serving the U.S. Senate. He received his Bachelors degree at the University of Florida, and his J.D. at the University of Miami. He practiced from 1997-2010, while he was a Florida State Representative. He was then the Speaker of the Florida House before becoming Senator in 2011.
Democrats
(Listed as they are currently ranked by Real Clear Politics--margin of error: +/- 3.8.
For the sake of brevity, only candidates with above 3% are included.)
Hillary Clinton- 55%
The Standard "For" Argument:
Hillary Clinton has had vast experience in politics for the majority of her life. We would have a female president, which many believe will empower the movement for equal pay and equal rights. She has proved her ability to perform under immense amounts of stress. She also has many connections in politics, which would present many strong allies for her, if she were elected.
The Standard "Against" Argument:
She has been behind numerous scandals from the start of her career as the United States Secretary of State. She has been part of the political realm for the majority of her life, and has a number of ties to old politics. She has changed opinions on numerous issues, such as abortion and same-sex marriage. Many people believe she is corrupt and will bring America down with her.
The Facts:
Hillary Clinton is the former United States Secretary of State. Currently 67 years old, she was born in Chicago, IL. She received her Bachelors degree at Wellesley College before heading to Yale Law. She was the First Lady of Arkansas before becoming the First Lady of the United States from 1993-2001. After her husband left office, she became a United States Senator for New York.
Bernie Sanders- 19%
The Standard "For" Argument:
He does not take money from 'big business,' and strives on having his campaign contributions be from individuals. He is very intent on lessening, and possibly eliminating, costs of a college education. He is also a huge supporter of wealth distribution and welfare. He has recently made gains on Hillary, which lead many to believe he truly has a shot at the nomination. Many of his supporters say he is "the most trustworthy candidate."
The Standard "Against" Argument:
He came out of nowhere, and did not even truly have a name for himself in politics before this presidential run. Many say he is essentially a "socialist," and has so many "great ideas" for America without any proper plan for funding except "taking" from the rich and giving it to the poor. Opposers and supporters also have stated he also does not have the necessary funding to compete against the Republican nominee.
The Facts:
Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Bernie Sanders is currently 73 years old. He attended both Brooklyn College and the University of Chicago. Prior to getting into politics, Bernie was a carpenter, filmmaker, and researcher. He became the mayor of Burlington, VT, in 1981, before claiming a spot in the House in 1991. He is currently a United States Senator for the state of Vermont.
Joe Biden- 12%
The Standard "For" Argument:
He has had direct exposure to the office of the President for the past eight years. As Vice President, he has advocated for increased gun control in light of the many shootings that have been going on nationwide. In all of the reports that have been put out about his possible run for office, statements have been made that he is considering a one-term run, which would allow for changes to be made quickly if America was not happy with his performance.
The Standard "Against" Argument:
Many believe he has done almost nothing as Vice President. He speaks very bluntly, and has misspoken publicly on numerous occasions, which has created concern for his statesmanship and abilities in foreign relations. He recently called the shooter of the five servicemen a "perverted jihadist," which some believe shows his relations with other countries would most likely be subpar. Many opposers believe Biden wants to "take away our guns and leave us defenseless."
The Facts:
While Biden has still not publicly made any claims saying he will run in 2016, he is already rallying quite a bit of support in the polls. He is originally from Scranton, PA, and is currently 72 years old. He is the current Vice President of the United States, and was jointly elected twice with Barack Obama. He attended the University of Delaware before heading to Syracuse Law.
