With those last few weeks of spring semester dragging on, the only thing keeping you sane is the thought of summer break right around the corner. Sunshine, the beach, road trips, vacations... I mean you and your best friend have had your Summer 2015 bucket list finished since winter. With all these great plans running through your head, all you can focus on is how amazing the summer is going to be and how nothing could possibly ruin it. With school finally out and you finally home again, reality quickly starts to set in. Staying home, whether that be your literal home or just your hometown, makes for a very long and uneventful summer.
Suddenly, all your friends are gone.
Sure, you see all your friends from high school, but let's be honest: How many of those people do you actually keep in touch with? It's as though all your old roommates, friends from class, and sorority sisters (basically anyone you met this year) are from a completely different state.
No, your mom doesn't want to cook for you.
Or do your laundry or clean your bathroom or make you a home cooked meal. Those days of coming home on the weekends to your laundry folded and bagged and a hot plate of dinner on the table are long gone. During the year, you only see your parents a few times during the semester, so of course they're more than happy to help you out. Now that you're back home and they have to deal with you every day? You're suddenly an adult again.
But she does want to know everything going on in your life.
College is great because you have a vast amount of freedom to do whatever you please whenever you want, no questions asked. Being home is pretty similar to this except EVERY question is asked. "What are you doing tonight?" "Who are you hanging out with?" "Will you be home?" Even with all the freedom in the world, it's still awkward telling your mom you're just "hanging with friends" only to walk through the door the next morning with mascara running down your face.
You are still broke.
Summer is the perfect time to work a lot of hours and save a lot of money since you're not doing anything anyway, right? WRONG. Summer is the time to ask for a ton of days off so you can at least attempt to have a social life, resulting in a much smaller paycheck than anticipated. Along with your usual bills as always since you don't get a break from rent being home and all. It's safe to say you learn how to make $10 last a pretty long time.
And lastly, Netflix. Just Netflix.
Do I really have to say what we all already know? Netflix, Hulu, Popcorn Time... whatever your streaming choice may be, it has turned into a full blown addiction. With no friends and no money, what else are you supposed to do anyway?
