When I was in the third grade, my parents got separated. In fifth grade, they divorced. I’d be lying if I said that it didn’t affect me or if I said that it wasn’t hard to go through. However, I believe in finding ups in a situation when you’re feeling down. I think that you can always learn from something, even though it can take time.
I realize that I’m luckier than most in this situation, but for a while I didn’t think or feel that way. No child likes seeing their parents separate from one another or be sad, why would they?
Especially when as a child, you feel like the only one in the situation. Especially if you're from a small town like I am.
However, things changed. Throughout the years, I began to be less sad and more thankful, thankful for what the divorce taught me.
When I first thought to write this article, I was hesitant. I’ve never been one to be public on my personal life, that’s just not my style. But at the same time, sometimes things need to be said in order to make others feel as though they are not alone.
So, why not.
This is what divorce taught me.
It taught me that things happen for a reason. While divorce was never ideal, I’ve come to realize that maybe it was for the best. Life is always going to throw things in our path that we'd rather not deal with. But, sometimes those things can be something that was meant to be and teach us something.
It taught me that love couldn’t be defined. Even though my parents were no longer in love, they had a love for each other and continue to have a love for each other that is so much better. They continue to care for one another on a different level.
It taught me that friendship could remain even through rough times. Even now, my parents remain best friends. Growing up, this has shown me that there will always be times in life that are difficult, but their support of one another shows me that anything is possible.
It taught me the value of family. Not only did the divorce make me more appreciative of the family I had, it taught me the true value of family. While my parents are no longer married, they value my siblings and I enough to make our family work. Not all families are nuclear, and that is okay.
It taught me that love still exists. Even though it didn't work out with my mom and dad, they've continued to lead by example and teach me that love is still there, and to never doubt it. Love comes in all different shapes, sizes and styles.
It taught me that communication is key. One of the most valuable things I learned through the experience was that positive dialogue is the best way to get a message across. Expressing how you feel is so important.
It taught me how to be independent. Something about divorce is that you see both of your parents take on important situations and roles, expect independently. Their divorce taught me that while it is okay to be dependent and lean on someone, it is also important to be able to be independent and do things by and for yourself.
It taught me that I am so lucky to have such amazing parents. Thank you Mom and Dad, you guys are the best role models a daughter could ask for.
