What One Year In Alpha Sigma Tau Has Taught Me
Bridgette Connolly

I love the anchor. I love the yellow rose. I love the crest and I love the green and gold. I love my sisters all, in Alpha Sigma Tau.

I went into recruitment with an open mind. After night one, I had that song stuck in my head. "I love my sisters all, in Alpha Sigma Tau." I knew my heart would forever be in AΣT. I got to join an organization on campus with over 100 girls that all shared the same morals. An organization with purpose, that strives to do the best at everything, and for women to come together to improve each other. It's an organization that I need in my life.

Be active.

Nothing comes from sitting in your bed all day. To be the best you can be, you have to active within the sorority, on campus and around your community. The more you get involved in AΣT, the more you get out of it. You build better relationships with your sister and your advisers. Your advisers are going to mean the world to you while you're in. But be active in more than just the sorority. There is a whole world out there that needs Alpha Sigma Tau. Be active on campus in clubs, student government and in classes. Be more than just a "sorority girl." Be a leader, a 4.0 student and a person who is there to help every single person around her, not just her sisters. You can find your true potential the more active you get. This organization has opened even more doors for me for my college career. In just one year I have learned to get out of my comfort zone and do all that the world has to offer me. I get to be involved more on campus and in my community.

Be self-reliant.

The sorority is making me a better person day by day. That means I will always have my own powers to do and get what I want. I have sisters who push me to always do better because, to improve the world, I need to improve myself. We are an organization full of women who can and will support ourselves and use our own powers to always do our best. AΣT has shown me that I can conquer any obstacle, overcome every burden and fight through any battle to always become a better person at the end. I've learned that it always up to me in my life. I get what I put into everything and it's up to me to make my college career the best it could ever be.

Be trustworthy.

A lot comes from a simple term. But being trustworthy means also being respectful. Follow the rules, do what you were told and keep your word. Be a woman that your sisters can always turn to. Being trustworthy makes you the better student and employee. It makes you girlfriend material, not FWB material. It makes me a student that will always get my work done on time. It makes me someone who anyone can turn to. It makes us all women full of grace that will do stuff for the needs of others. I've learned that any organization, relationship or group just needs trust. Trust one another to do the right thing, represent responsibly, and as sisters to be each other's backbone not back stabber.

I've been in this organization for only one year, one year that has changed my life for the better. Without my sorority I wouldn't have future bridesmaids at my wedding, wouldn't have motivation, wouldn't have fun or anything to look forward to. With AΣT, I get to continue to grow as a woman to my fullest potential with sisters who I cannot picture my life without. You're in it for life, and for the rest of my life, I will honor our values because my letters are a part of me forever.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
