What My Time With Odyssey Has Taught Me

I started writing for Odyssey just this past summer of 2015 and I have already learned a ton through this experience. It was summer, and I was only taking two classes, so I decided to seek out some opportunities to boost my resume and exercise my writing skills. Odyssey just kind of fell into my lap, as I’d never heard of it before, but boy did I realize how much I was missing out on. There is a lot of talent among the Odyssey writers and I don’t just mean within our narrative abilities, but also through being successful in all that we do. Here’s what joining the writing team for Odyssey taught me:

Not that I didn’t already know this but writing for Odyssey really nailed into my head the importance of deadlines. Every week without fail, I had to provide content for my article on Saturday by 5 p.m. This sometimes became problematic as I work on the weekends usually well past that deadline, so I learned to plan ahead and write something worth reading so that it wouldn’t be last minute fluff to fill the page. I enjoyed this aspect of Odyssey because it was like a real job, and gave me a sneak peek of what I will be heading into once I graduate.

I also discovered, there is no such thing as writer’s block—sort of. Time and time again, I have suffered from what all writers do at some point—you just can’t get any words on the page. Every week, I have to come up with a topic to write my article about and after so many you start to wonder, is there any other topic that hasn’t already been done that I could write about? Every week it gets harder but every week it gets done. Writer’s block, it seems Odyssey has taught me how to defeat you.

Another important lesson I have learned is to take a chance writing something out of your comfort zone. For me, that was a news article. I'm not much of a news buff and prefer to keep my opinions of what's in the news to myself, but Odyssey gave me the chance to branch out and try new things which I find to be a valuable opportunity to expand my skill set and what I have to offer future companies I apply for.

I've enjoyed this year, writing for Odyssey, and want to thank everyone who takes part in it and makes it happen, from the editors to the readers. Everyone plays a part in making the plethora of stories come to life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
