What Music Says About Breakups

This week I am experiencing my first breakup. I was in a relationship for over a year and a half, so yeah, you could say I'm taking it a bit hard. Of course, to get myself through it I had to make myself a breakup playlist. I've been listening to it nonstop. By doing so, I have learned some things. These songs are encouraging me, giving me lessons and making me know it is okay to feel the way I am. Maybe I'm just super lonely and feel as though my music is speaking to me, but here are some things my breakup anthems have told me, through their lyrics, about my breakup--

1. I'll find someone like you. (Someone Like You- Adele)

2. You can't make someone love you if they don't. (I Can't Make You Love Me- Ronnie Raitt)

3. You wrecked me. (Wrecking Ball- Miley Cyrus)

4. I have to get my forget you on. (You Broke Up With Me- Walker Hayes)

5. We are never getting back together. (We Are Never Getting Back Together- Taylor Swift).

6. Its different for girls when their hearts get broken. They can't pretend the love was never there, and it isn't really fair. Guys react differently, and not always how we would want them to. (It's Different For Girls- Dierks Bentley)

7. I have to love myself, and I don't need anybody else. (Me Too- Meghan Trainor/ Love Myself- Hailee Steinfeld)

8. I'm giving up on love because love gave up on me. (Kerosene- Miranda Lambert)

9. There's pain in my chest, but I still wish you the best. But, forget you. (Forget You- CeeLo Green)

10. All the single ladies, put your hands up. *Puts up hand.* I can participate in this song now! (Single Ladies- Beyonce)

11. I'm ready to forgive you, but forgetting is hard. When you fall asleep, I'm breaking. It's going to take time to get over this. (Little Do You Know- Alex & Sierra)

12. It's not us no more. It's just you and me. (You & Me- Marc E. Bassy)

13. If you want love, lower your expectations. But we all deserve love even when we aren't our best because love makes us suck less. (If You Want Love/Lower Your Expectations- Bo Burnham)

14. Stay with me cause you're all I need. (Stay With Me- Sam Smith)

15. You don't have to act like nothing happened and that it was nothing. (Somebody That I Used To Know- Gotye)

16. You had my heart inside your hand, and you played it to the beat. (Rolling In The Deep- Adele)

17. Come on Skinny Love, what happened here? I'm breaking. (Skinny Love- Birdy)

18. I'm not going to be that easy to leave. I'm gonna make you miss me. (Make You Miss Me- Sam Hunt)

19. If you really love me, don't let go. (Unsteady- X Ambassadors)

20. It's just me, myself and I. (Me, Myself & I- G-Eazy, Bebe Rexha)

21. I ain't thinking about you. BOY BYE! (Sorry- Beyonce)

22. Love don't live here anymore cause he walked out the door with my heart. Love is not like it is in the movies at all. (Somebody Else- Miley Cyrus)

23. You needed me. (Needed Me- Rihanna)

24. You should go and love yourself. (Love Yourself- Justin Bieber)

25. You're gone so I gotta stay high all the time (on chocolate and ice cream) to keep you off my mind. (Habits- Tove Lo)

26. I'll be the one if you want me to. You're the one that I love, and I'm going to have to say goodbye. I'm giving up on you. (Say Something- A Great Big World)

27. Fix your makeup, girl, it's just a breakup. (Mama's Broken Heart- Miranda Lambert)

28. When you see my face I hope it gives you hell. (Gives You Hell- The All-American Rejects)

29. I WILL SURVIVE. (I Will Survive- Gloria Gaynor)

Obviously, breakups cause a wide range of emotions to come out, and I'm feeling probably every one. Thankfully, my music is telling me that's perfectly acceptable.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
