What It Means To Be A Big Sister

It's not always the easiest job, but it's one that I wouldn't trade for the world.

What It Means To Be A Big Sister
Raven Rentas

Growing up, I constantly complained to my parents how badly I wanted to be a sister. As the years passed by, I began to accept the excuses they made and assumed that my one and only wish had no possibility of coming true. I would never have a little brother or sister to look after. I would never be an aunt. I would never have that special, unique bond that comes with having a sibling. I accepted my fate and became OK with the fact that I would never have any of this. However, right when I had given up, a miracle happened — my best friend was born.

It has been seven years since Amanda, my little sister, was born and I couldn't have asked for it any other way. It took awhile for her to come into my life, for I was already a teenager when she entered it, but my life has been nothing but wonderful ever since she has made her debut in it.

People weren't kidding when they said that being an older sibling changes your life. Yeah, there are times when I get annoyed with my little sister and yes, sometimes I want to be alone, but at the end of the day, there's never an instance where I am not thankful for the little girl that has essentially become my life.

Before the birth of Amanda, I was an ordinary girl, but once she entered the world I took on the role of being an older sister (and believe me, that is a role much bigger than it seems). As a big sister, I am obligated to be anything and everything my sister needs. There are many factors that come into being the greatest older sister I could be and I take on whatever role I must in order to accomplish this goal of mine.

I am my sister's biggest supporter.

Although she is little, she still experiences difficulties and although they are minor, they are important. Whether Amanda needs help because she doesn't understand an addition problem in math or asks for advice on how to win the creativity competition in her school, it is my duty to encourage her. As she gets older and faces problems bigger than she thinks she can handle, I will continue to remind her that she is capable of anything. No matter her age or the situation she is in, I will always give my sister an endless amount of support.

I am my sister's role model.

While I am only 18-years-old and do not have an insane amount of accomplishments, I work hard to improve myself and a huge reason is because of my sister. I want to teach her that work ethic pays off and through it, she can pursue whatever her dreams are, regardless of how big or small in size they are. Through long nights of studying, I want to inspire Amanda that through a lot of effort, anything is possible. By performing random acts of kindness, I aim to teach my sister the importance of being a genuinely sweet person. Being her older sister, I inspire Amanda to be the best she can be while bettering myself in the process of doing so.

I am my sister's best friend.

From the silly faces we make to the pranks we pull on each other, we always have the greatest times together. As her older sister, I will always look out for Amanda and make sure that she's OK. I will encourage her, annoy her and always be there for her.

Although being a big sister is definitely a huge role to take on, it is one that I take the most pride in. While it is stressful at times, it has truly brightened my life and has brought me a happiness I never knew of. Being a big sister is a gift that I will never take advantage of and one that I will always cherish.

Amanda, you rock and thank you for making my life as extraordinary as it is.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
