What Makes Natural Hair So Unprofessional?

I don't owe anybody any change on something that is mine to please them, and not myself.

Now I have one simple question: Why is natural hair considered unprofessional?

I've never saw my kinks as something that was never acceptable in the work place simply because of the fact that it was something that I couldn't control. It was something that grew out of my head like the that same female with the straight blonde hair, yet hers was accepted and mine was deemed "distracting" or too "ethnic."

That can honestly hurt somebody's feelings telling them they should change what is completely natural just so everybody can work in a "non-distracting" environment. It's my hair that I decided to style not to please or distract anybody in my workplace. What I decide to wear my hair shouldn't change anybody's idea on the way I do my work. Simply because it's my hair. I was offered a job because of the skills that I can provide to the workplace. If my hair was so distracting then I wouldn't be offered the job, now would I?

Almost every woman who wears their natural hair can tell you stories of discrimination or being fired simply based on their hair. What sense does that make? Why should my hair or anybody else's hair determine my value in the workplace?

The number of times I've been told "you look so much better with your hair straight! It looks way more professional." It sometimes makes me want to perm my hair in order to fit in something in a workplace, but then I think then I just proved them right. I proved them right that my hair is unprofessional, it is distracting and doesn't deserve to be in any workplace.

I refuse to do that. I refuse for anybody to think that natural hair, especially mine, is unprofessional in any setting because it's simply out of the ordinary for most. It's mine like the clothes on back and the shoes on my feet, so I don't owe anybody any change on something that is mine to please them and not myself.

I just hope that the idea of unprofessionalism within the workplace changes for something more positive. I want people to at least respect it because it's simply mine and no one else's.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
