It seemed living with a bestfriend was an ideal situation when we were younger, and let's be honest, a lot of us would talk about it with our friends. However, when it comes down to it, very few people actually end up being roommates with a close friend. I have had the privilege to have been living with my best friend of six years for almost two years now. When we both decided to go to the same college, many people with bad past experiences warned us "if you want to keep being friends, do not live together!" We still decided to be roommates in college and it has been one of the smartest decisions I have taken. It's nice to have someone you trust experiencing college alongside you. The advantages definitely outweigh any disadvantages when living with a close friend. And here they are....
1. You never have to be alone
Somehow you are synced to each other, you both feel like going out some days while other days are unplanned movie nights with takeout and your pajamas.
2. You spend so much time together, it's creepy how well you know each other
My roommate once told me she knows my mood by the way I open the door to our room and I hadn't realized we finish each other's sentences until someone awkwardly pointed it out.
3. You don't get sick of each other
When people ask "Don't you get tired of always being together?" No, the answer is no.
4. You listen to each other complain
About anyone and everything and you occasionally add more fuel to that fire, but it's okay because you always give each other the best advice.
5. They don't judge you
I know you are binge watching "The Walking Dead" when you should be studying for your final. But it's okay because I am too.
6. But they do give you the occasional reality check
It's hard sometimes to put your own life into perspective. Thankfully, your roommate knows you have a paper due tomorrow and like the friend they are, they're going to let you know that if you don't get that done, you won't pass the class.
7. You act as each other's mom
You find yourselves nagging each other with things such as "wear a coat, or you'll get sick" and "See? I told you, now eat these oranges you need some vitamin C" and somehow, this is comforting.
8. Late night conversations can get weird, but are fulfilling nonetheless
The later it is, the more intense the conversations get and the more weird ideas you come up with.
9. You motivate each other
You force each other to go to the gym, to eat salads, go to office hours, and do better in life. When you're low on motivation, your best friend is there with reassurance and comfort.
10. Boring errands and chores are not so boring
Doing laundry, cleaning the bathroom, and going grocery shopping suddenly become reasons to sing at the top of your lungs.
11. You can share your worries and uncertainties about the future
Thankfully, you can reassure each other and feel much better when you know you're not the only one worrying about that specific thing. Being able to openly vent with the person you live with is the best.
