There probably aren't many statistics on this, but I feel as if serious female sports fans are a minority in this world.
Just the other night I was hanging out with friends and some of the guys had ESPN turned on. Sooner than later, I realized that I was sitting with a bunch of guys watching SportsCenter while my girl friends were sitting somewhere else and talking.
This isn't a rare occurrence for me either. You can always find me getting sports updates on my phone or talking to a guy about the game last night.
The point I am trying to make is not that female fans are persecuted. We aren't. But because the world of sports is slightly male-dominated, our fan experience is a bit different.
Sports are a huge part of my life - irreplaceable even. There are at least 5 things I've learned by being a female sports fan.
1. I Dislike Having My Motives Questioned
No, I don’t watch sports because the players are hot. I watch it for the same reason guys do, so I can enjoy the game, yell at the refs for a bad call and have team pride when my team wins.
2. Pink Jerseys Aren't Okay
The issue I have with pink jerseys and fan apparel is that it is truly a gender stereotype.
Just because I am a girl, doesn’t mean I want to wear a pink jersey. I want to wear the team colors. The topic of pink jerseys has been discussed and mentioned so much, I don’t really want to get into it.
That isn't to say that I don't appreciate when pink is a part of breast cancer awareness. Because I do appreciate what the national sports leagues like the MLB and NFL do for the cause.
3. Being Excited To Watch The Big Game Is Fun Until You Realize Your Friends Have Zero Interest
Does this happen to anyone else? I always feel like I am the only one excited for the upcoming Warriors game or the next fight. I also get strange looks when I am yelling at the refs at college football or basketball games.
4. I Have To Constantly Prove I'm A Fan
People automatically assume because I am a female that I don't have any sports knowledge. I don't like when I have to answer "Name five players on the team." I don’t ask a guy "Name a player other than LeBron." when he says he is a Cavs fan. So why do people tell me to name another player besides Curry when I say I am a Warriors fan. Maybe one day female sports fans can live without these double standards.
5. I Feel Pressured To Keep Up With Every Obsolete Statistic
Oh, you are a Patriots fan? "What was the blood type of the head coach the year you were born?" Seriously? Is that necessary? I can tell you better stats like the last 15 World Series winners, the last 12 Super Bowl winners, what year Tom Brady was drafted and other facts.
