What It's Like When You Have An Old Man

Eh, he may be old, but he's special.

Growing up with an older dad is interesting to say the least. He's not the hip, young fellow that he used to be, however, he is till your dad and although he may be older.....older than your friends parents....he still knows how to have a good time, but maybe in an old-fashion way. If you have an older dad, then you may understand some of the things that you go through with him.

1.Sometimes people may assume that your father is actually your grandfather.

You may be in the school cafeteria, when you father brings you lunch. All of your friends see him and says that your grandfather is here. Thinking, that your grandfather really was there, you search for him. You tell your friends that he's not here, that's my dad! Your friends look shock and then you feel embarrassed. Then you think to yourself, does my dad really look that old?

2. You have never seen his hair and quite frankly do not remember him ever having hair.

I mean you have seen a few grey strands on his hair, when he takes his hat off, but other than that, his head is as shiny as a light bulb.

3. He uses phrases, or sayings that you have never heard, ever before.

When he starts rattling on about someone driving slow and how they are like "maw paw and kettle," you get lost because you have no idea what that even means. Or when he starts being all gibberish like "Don't throw the baby out with the Bathwater." Like what are you saying, are you speaking a foreign language?

4. Not only does he know history, but he has lived through the history.

Hey, you may not even need to read your history book because you have a dad that has lived through the whole chapters, or so it feels like that.

5. When new technology is still a burden to them.

When the only phone he uses is the flip phone because he is from the generation that only calls. Or when he gets a laptop computer and cannot even use it because its "too new," and doesn't have a mouse like a desktop computer.

6. Does he even listen to Music? Yes, but it's that raunchy, country from the old days.

Every time you enter his car, his music is on low, but when you can hear the whisper, it's Johnny Cash, or someone that probably has died within the last decade

7. It's dinner already? It's only 5:00.

I guess back in the day 5:00 was a normal dinner time for people. So they could digest their food and do family things, I suppose. Now, it's too hectic to even make that time.

Having an older dad has its challenges, but he's your dad, so you kinda have to try to understand him. Even though he may be old, okay really old, he is still like any other dad, just more wiser.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
