If there was one thing I would change about myself it would be my tendency to overthink every aspect of my life! Being an overthinker is not only stressful but causes anxiety and excessive worrying.
I’ve been an overthinking since I can remember. Being an over-thinker caused me to also be a planner. I was the kid that worried about completing my school work, had my clothes laid out the night before and even set my own bedtime.
The worst part about being an overthinker is the obsessive nature of the brain. I will literally analyze something through and through, creating different situations and outcomes, some of which are completely and statistically unlikely. But the unknown and what if’s of potential situations cause me more worry and stress. This leads to anxiety and sometimes anxiety attacks.
Sometimes I wish I could have a picture in my head of a beautiful field with wild flowers, clouds, and the sun and turn my brain off from thinking about anything else.
Sometimes it feels like I have to have something to over think or worry about. It’s become a part of who I am.
But I’ve learned to handle my overthinking by concentrating on focusing on what I can control today. I have learned to relax and breathe.
I also try really hard not to jump to conclusions because it’s the worst possible way to handle situations.
I’ve learned to pray about things and leave it in God’s hands. We can only control so much and I find comfort in knowing that I don’t have to control everything.
I also create lists: to-do lists, lists of bills, events, goals, etc. Lists help me focus, plan, and give me a sense of control, which in turn helps me to not overthink.
Being an overthinker is a part of who I am. And as much as I wish I could change it, it has helped me develop and grow in other areas of life. I’m great at planning and coordinating activities. I’m also a very driven and goal-oriented person.
I love who I am and have learned that each person is made of both positive and negative traits. We have to love each aspect of who we are because it makes us unique. Learn to embrace and appreciate everything about yourself.
