Coffee – {noun} A sweet sweet nectar that forces your body to function, even when it does not want to. A bit of a chameleon as well, as it may change its taste and appearance in order to satisfy the one who needs it. But be warned, many have said it can be very addictive. Consume at your own risk.
This should be the real definition of the drink in dictionaries today, as maybe then, us addicts would have heeded to the warning included. But then again, do I regret tasting that brilliant liquid on my tongue every morning? Absolutely not.
You see, coffee is the drink sent down to earth by the gods. Not only does it possess ethereal qualities, as it can wake a person up at the mere smell of its scent, but it also tastes as though each sip is a gift given to the drinker. One’s morning is simply not complete without a freshly brewed cup of coffee in hand, and enjoyed to the very last drop. I am clearly not the only one who feels this way, as places like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts would simply not be able to “run” without us addicts out there bowing down at the smell of their brews.
And as joyful as the time spent drinking that cup of coffee in the morning is, that very last sip brings with it both desire and heartache. For when a coffee-addict looks down at their beloved mug and sees it empty with nothing remaining but the remnants of those past moments of unequivocal bliss, their heart begins to tear apart. Not only do we yearn to refill the cup immediately, but we also fear that the end of that first cup brings with it the rest of the day. That last sip of coffee forces all of us to start our days, whether we want to or not. All of those moments of nirvana whilst drinking that first cup seem to vanish with the thought of facing the trials and tribulations of the day ahead.
However, that is not the intention of the sweet nectar given to us. Coffee is meant to give us all the courage and energy we need to attack the day before us, and come out of it victorious. And while yes, finishing a cup of it sucks, we must realize that upon the finish we are fueled with everything we need to make it through the day.
No matter whether black, brown, sweetened, creamed, or iced, coffee will find a way to satisfy your cravings and fill your body with what it needs to kill it at that job interview, or to drag your body over to the gym to keep that New Year’s resolution. That’s the magic behind the brew.
So no matter how dark times may seem when you look down at that empty coffee cup, remember that someone’s got your back. Even if they force you to run to the bathroom later…
