On a daily basis, I catch myself wishing something in my life had gone differently or getting upset because I’m not losing weight like I want to be, or feeling like the ugly step-sister when everyone around me is in a relationship, or striving for a perfect “Pinterest” inspired house, or looking into my future and having an anxiety attack thinking about graduating college and stepping into the real world. Sound familiar to anyone?
We, as humans, tend to get so wrapped up in this idea of “perfect” that we lose sight of being unique and finding ourselves and I am as guilty of this as the next person. I see 13-year-old girls who I would have guessed were about 18 because they are “contouring” their faces with makeup, wearing belly shirts and skimpy shorts and acting much older than they actually are. I want to know what happened to wearing Old Navy Ts, putting sticky sparkles on your eyelids without your mom’s permission and hanging out at the bowling alley or mall for hours on end.
It’s 2016, and I think that we need to reevaluate our perception of “perfect." Quite frankly, I’m sick and tired of feeling like I am not good enough if I don’t have makeup on, if I am not a size two, or if I am not tall, tan, athletic and naturally look like a supermodel. And I know that I am not the only one feeling this way. Let’s try to change our perception of “perfect” and see our beautiful world for what it is, as opposed to what it can be transformed into.
That being said, here are a few things in this crazy world that I find to be perfect.
- A parent teaching their son or daughter how to fish for the first time.
- Blankets. All year round.
- Hugs.
- The light in someone’s eyes when they speak about something they are proud of.
- Tripping up the stairs. (We all do it.)
- Sun. Rain. Snow. Wind. Because the seasons are something we have no control over.
- Coffee.
- Arguments/fights followed by apologies.
- Tattoos. Because no two are the exact same.
- Beer.
- Laughing until you cry, pee, or can’t breathe.
- Freckles, moles, scars, tan lines and wrinkles.
- Bacon.
- Smiles.
Some of these may seem silly, but they really are some of the small things in life that can deter our thoughts from the rest of the negative happening in the world around us. Focus on the less-than-perfect, perfect things in your life and see what happens!
