looking for hard hitting news, Buzzfeed probably isn't your best bet. If you're
looking for a handy procrastination tool and some shockingly witty and
relatable articles, Buzzfeed is for you. I first stumbled upon Buzzfeed while
scrolling through my Facebook feed. One of my sisters who lived across the hall
posted "25 Amazing Benefits of Living With Your Best Friends" and I
found myself laughing out loud as I found myself relating to every one of the
25 points made. As I browsed through the website, I began to wonder what
exactly Buzzfeed is and how it became an Internet sensation.
One thing I do
know is that Buzzfeed is entertaining as hell. The quiz section is my go-to
procrastination tool. Some of the quizzes seem to have real psychology behind
them, while others are merely amusing. If I'm having a bad day, the animals
section (under "life") can cheer me up in seconds with pictures of
some of the cutest and smallest animals on the Internet. There are also plenty
of witty memes to discover.
Everyone in my generation can relate to Buzzfeed's
content because the writers truly know pop culture.
Buzzfeed knows
how to appeal to its audience, but it's also in the process of redefining
itself in attempt to gain a more diverse audience. Buzzfeed claims to be more
than just a procrastination tool for college students: "BuzzFeed is redefining online
advertising with its social, content-driven publishing technology.
BuzzFeed
provides the most shareable breaking news, original reporting, entertainment
and video across the social web to its global audience of 100M". While the
content itself might be laugh worthy, the popularity of the website is no joke.
Buzzfeed is one of the top 10 most-visited news sites. The
"listicles" that Buzzfeed monopolizes are all over Facebook and other
social media sites, where almost 75% of readers stumble upon the news
originally. Publishing hard news is becoming more mainstream for Buzzfeed
writers. The company is based in New York and has over 150 journalists in
addition to foreign correspondents and international bureaus and is looking to
hire more journalists.
The future of Buzzfeed
seems to be bright, but it all depends on whether the company can balance hard
news and entertainment news.
