If you are in college, odds are you have come across the theories and teachings of the Austrian psychologist Sigmund Freud. Freud has published 22 books and several more papers on subjects including dreams, the unconscious, and sexuality. But by examining the Oedipus complex, Freud’s explanation of unconscious, repressed desires as stemming from one’s desire to have sex with his mom, you might come to the same conclusion that I did: Freud wanted to bang his mom and all the work he did was an attempt to justify it.
The first time you read or heard about the Oedipus complex, you probably thought, “It’s pretty weird to assume that everyone wants to have sex with his mom.” Well, that’s because it is weird. The vast majority of people do not want to have sex with their mom. But I guess Freud did, so he spent his entire life trying to convince everyone else that they want to have sex with his mom so he wouldn’t feel weird.
Picture this. A young Sigmund Freud and his friends are talking about girls they are interested in. Freud makes the unfortunate mistake of telling his friends that he wants to have sex with his mom. Naturally, his friends start making fun of him for wanting to have sex with his mom, so Freud defensively tells them, “Everyone wants to have sex with his mom. I’ll prove it!” After decades of writing and research, Freud created an extensive collection of different writings, theories, and concepts, many of which are still closely studied today, all because he wanted to have sex with his mom.
Today, psychology is one of the most popular fields of study at American universities, and Sigmund Freud is still a very influential figure in psychology, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and several other fields of study. Maybe Freud was just one of the most brilliant thinkers the world has ever seen and his work has forever changed Western schools of thought. Or maybe the "father of psychoanalysis" was just trying to cuckold his own father and have sex with his mom, and the joke's on us because we're still talking about it.
