Are you a high school student that is wowed by the beautiful campus of Eckerd College? Are you swayed by our awesome pet policy, or perhaps an aspiring Marine Biologist? Are you wondering if it's truly worth it to drop everything and move to sunny St. Petersburg and go into student loans? I just finished my first year, and I'll let you know what it's REALLY like.
Marine Science
Most every freshman that wants to come to Eckerd wants to major in Marine Biology. Trust me, if there are five students at least four of them want that major. What everyone fails to tell you is that Marine Biology isn't working with dolphins or marine mammals, it's sediments and seagrass basically. Wannabe animal trainers please check the Psychology department. (P.S The math is way hard for M.S)
Autumn term
Basically a month of just first year students. You'll walk around like you own the place for the month and then be completely recognizable when the upperclassmen come back. Stamped events suck, you'll hate your life over them. You'll learn to be creative and try to get double stamps, draw your own, etc. I've seen some pretty creative things done over them.
The closed campus thing gets old, quickly.
Picture this: You just finished getting ready for your date with a person from off campus. They're coming to get you to take you downtown. You get a call. It's them saying that campus security has them stopped at the front gate because they're not a registered guest.
This is a ridiculous thing that I had to deal with my entire year. Word of advice: even if they're not staying overnight, just register them as a guest. This will save you so much time.
Pet Policy
Basically all standard Poodles and Australian Shepherds- but hey I'm not complaining.
The pet policy is actually very nice, although most of the dogs are not under 40 pounds. It's not a bad thing though, I feel as if the weight restriction should be pushed up about 20 more pounds. The dogs I've seen are generally all very happy.
For you small pet owners: Almost everyone here has a small pet. Most people have little Beta fish, hamsters, or lizards. A lot of people have snakes but PLEASE leave it at home.
Cats normally chill in their rooms, but occasionally you'll see one on a leash. Or the Kool Kat that lives at Kappa who chills on the eyebrows.
Food
You'll learn to live off the Pub. Their are only really two food places on campus: the Pub and the Cafe. The Cafe gets repetitive and old. Except on late night breakfast, or taco Tuesday. Don't let the tour guides fool you. I heard one the other day talk about our pasta and taco stations and how we have them everyday or so. We don't. Lies.
We have a Starbucks located in the James center.
Parties
Yes, we really do have themed parties every week. Yes, I said every week. In my opinion, they get really repetitive and slightly boring. I for one hate going to NU, or Kappa, and doing the same things every time. I recommend checking out the nightlife in downtown St. Petersburg or Ybor every now and then.
Small student body
The campus is very small- odds are you'll continue to see that one embarrassing person you hooked up with during autumn term. Word of advice: don't do it.
Girls vs Boys
This is a primarily girls school, as of right now. That could change with incoming classes.
Small classes
Classes here, in my opinion, are like being in high school. I think the maximum amount of people that I've had in my classes is 30, and the minimum is 9. If you were expecting a big auditorium class, this is not it.
No Greek life
GiphyThis was the one offset to this school for me. Our dorms are named after Greek life, but we do not have greek life. At least I can say I'm a Delta because I live in Delta?
Overall: Eckerd College is a small school that has fantastic academics, cares about the arts, is pet friendly, and is undergraduate only. Your professors work with you one on one and you have a mentor that will help you throughout your entire college career. Visit as many times as you can. Tour. Come to Explore Eckerd. Talk to real students who attend. This is one of the biggest decisions in your life- choose wisely!
