What Does It Mean To Be A Millennial?

Millennials is a term coined to describe the children of the “Baby Boomers” and they are considered,"The next great generation." In October 2004, researchers Neil Howe and William Strauss defined the group as those born between 1982 and 2004. This cut off makes me as well as many others a “Millennial.” This generation is finally coming of age, causing much discussion about the future leaders of the world.

This is the largest generation yet. Millennials makeup about 25% of the world population and will replace the “Baby Boomers” as they retire. There are about 80 million Millennials to date, but this generation continues to expand. There has been much controversy over people who identify as “Millennials” and the way they operate in the last year or so. This buzz is mostly because this new generation is so different from any previous generation.

Millennials are the most ethnically and racially diverse. The Millennial generation continues to grow as young immigrants expand its ranks. Each country’s millennials are different, but globalization, social media, and the exporting of American pop culture are causing Millennials worldwide to become more similar to one another than the older generations within their nations. The speed of change is also rapidly increasing as new trends and innovation occur much sooner.

Millennials are tech-savvy. They are growing up alongside technology and are paving the way for a digital future. They are ushering technology into the workplace as well as making it a fundamental piece of society. We are at the heart of the digital age and Millennials are seizing the new platforms of the digital era. Everything is becoming technology-based and as this new Millennial generation establishes its presence, we can only expect more and more technological innovations.

This generation has been described as, “confident, achievement orientated, and to have high expectations.” They exceed in the workplace. Millennials have also been described as, "the greatest generation, hardworking, clever and resourceful.” These traits can be linked to the fact that Millennials have the world at their fingertips. They utilize technology as well as other available resources to accomplish things earlier and get ahead of the competition. With this “winner” mentality, also comes selfishness and arrogance which have been controversial attributes of this new generation. Millennials are often used to getting what they want, having been born at a time when nowadays everyone receives a trophy even if they don’t deserve it.

They might put themselves first, but Millennials can envision the bigger picture. They are focused on changing the world and making a difference. With so many bright, young people coming into the light, there is bound to be remarkable discoveries in all fields. Millennials are driven and focused on being the next influencers and creators and are ready to forever change the world and the way we know it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
