What Do I Get Out Of Being In A Sorority?

The question most girls ask when rushing.

Most people have a pre-determined outlook on how sororities are, but being in a sorority can give you so many opportunities! Like most girls who are thinking of rushing, you are probably questioning what exactly do you get out of joining a sorority? Other than the stereotypes that revolve around sorority girls.

Finding Your "Person"

Well let's start by stating the obvious!

You get tons of smiling faces happy to see you! And what I mean by that is that you gain so many new friends. I know people say "well you just pay for your friends". Which, by the way, I hate because that is not true at all. Not everyone in your sorority will be your best friend, and you are not expected to be best friends with all the girls you meet. And honestly you won't be. But they will still be there for you just the same. I can call any of my sorority sisters for a favor or help and know that at least one, if not all, would be willing to help me. I can promise you that almost everyone finds a group or person in their sorority that makes the madness seem worth it. The one that will become a bridesmaid, a shoulder to cry on, your go-to for everything. For me, that was my little. For you, that could be your little too. Or maybe it will be your big or someone who is not your "family" at all. My point is you will always find someone who will make it hard to leave.

Networking & Making Connections

Not only do you meet new friends but with these friends comes all new connections. You begin to build a network with your sisters, and through your sorority you can find jobs and much more. When you take the time to get to know the girls in your chapter they won't mind helping or introducing you to other people who can help. For example, I wanted a part-time job for a little extra cash and my grand-little was the one who helped me get the job I have now. I am forever grateful for her taking the time to help me get a job. On a side note, now I see her beautiful face even more because we work together!

That is just one of the multiple ways being connected to a huge group of intelligent girls can benefit you! If there is anything you are looking for I bet that one of your future sisters has it or can point you in the right direction to get you it (help with a class, food, how to get somewhere, a place to crash at, etc.).

Being A Part Of Something Bigger

I know, I know that sounds cheesy when you say it out loud but its true! In my experience most women join a sorority because of a girl that gave them a reason to stay, like I said earlier. But once you are in you start to learn about philanthropy, morals, values, and community service. You start to really learn what kind of woman you want to become. You get more involved on campus and you raise money and work events for a cause. Though there is no reward afterwards, it fills you with a feeling that nothing else in the world can fill you with. You feel like you are making a difference, and that you are apart of something way bigger than you even realized. You are apart of a change. And when you rush, when you join a sorority you will want to do the same thing that I am talking to you about right now. You will want to explain to other girls what they will get from being in a sorority. Because when they ask, and they will ask you... You will smile and you will have so much to say.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
