It’s finally here! We have officially made it! We did everything we had to in order to reach this exact position, where we stand right now. We took all those classes, did our homework, made friends and finished high school unscathed (as much as possible). We're about to enter the realm of college. With just a few weeks or months away from the beginning of the semester, I think we all know that this seems surreal.
College is a time in our lives where we experience change among us. Everyone says it. People say it's cliche. But it's so true, there's just no other way to put it. Whether it may be our character, our appearance, our knowledge, or something else, changes will happen. However, we are who we are, and let’s not give college the power to transform us into something else completely. From what I've seen and heard, many people tend to change themselves so that they can fit in, but what they fail to realize is that being yourself is the right path. Just like you were told in high school, you shouldn’t worry about the judgments and opinions of others in college either. You will realize that if you follow this path, then you will be able to treasure and cherish your memories of college. Your memories won’t be with the people you try to fit in with, they will be with the people who accepted you for who you truly are.
Fears are supposed to be normal in college. Everyone has fears, whether it may be paying off your student loan, or avoiding the famous "Freshmen 15." But you see, you can avoid this easily. For example, instead of taking the bus all the time, consider walking to your classes, or going to the gym once in a while (hello, free admission!). Take the free classes that they offer, such as Zumba, cardio, or even a hip-hop class! You don’t always have to go for dieting, there are many alternative ways to avoid weight gain during college. Try to find solutions to overcome your fears. They say things might work out if you try them.
Now, the sometimes dreaded topic of roommates. Most freshman are scared about who they will end up with. Some think about how they won't get along with their roommates and some think about how their roommate won't even want to talk to them. Well, you never know. The possibilities are endless. But sooner or later, you hope you'll become good friends with your roommate. Your roommate may even be your best friend. Eventually, it’ll work out. Keep the thoughts positive, you’ll accept each other for who you are. You are stuck with each other for the rest of the term, but it's not a hostage situation. It will be okay.
Essentially, this is what college is all about. Experiencing awkward roommates. Loving spiders. Gaining weight. Losing weight. Eating more anyways. Getting out of your comfort zone. Being yourself. Meeting new people. And always accepting the challenges that come to you. Don’t run away from them, but rather embrace them with open arms. Just keep finding new ways to solve new challenges that come to you. And of course, remember to have a great freshmen year in college. Here's to the Class of 2019.
