She cries.
She doesn't know what's going on. After all, she's only six years old.
Her parents disappeared a couple of days ago, leaving behind her and her older brother. Scared, they fled from home and to the refugee shack in the next city over. Not knowing where their next meal would come from, they settled in the corner of the living quarters, and wept out of fear. They've got nothing and no one to take care of them. A sixteen year old and a six year old facing the world alone.
Her brother leaves the next morning to find work in the city where they are living, and she stays behind with the workers at the shack. He doesn't come home that night, or the next. A week passes by, and he never returns. She doesn't know where her brother is, or if he will ever come back. She misses her home, her mom and dad, her cat, her bedroom, her closet. She misses going to school and walking home without fear.
Syrian refugees are facing this in real life. This isn't just some story, made up to grab your emotions. Little girls and boys are losing their homes, their parents, their livelihoods, and many of us in America aren't doing much to help. We can continue to let this terrifying nightmare become a reality; where babies are being killed, parents are being struck down in front of their kids, women are being violated and treated like nothing. We can allow this to continue, but what kind of people would we be if we did?
If they can't come here, then we should go. We've got to stop being so comfortable in our secure country, and start living out what the Gospel says to. We are all called to care for the orphaned, the broken, and the lonely. We aren't called to sit on our couches and do nothing to help these people, many of whom, are Christians facing persecution in a way we can never even imagine in America. Get up and get out of your comfort zone, for we aren't called to be comfortable, but to reach out to the hurting and the needy. There are thousands of innocents dying each day from the attacks of radical Islam, and yes I am being politically incorrect because I am politically incorrect, but if we as a country simply sit back and watch these people die, then what good are we doing?
It's time we stand up and fight for what is right, instead of ignoring what's wrong.
