The Selfie Generation. Generation Z. The Millennials.
Whatever older generations call us, they all seem to mean the same thing: we're all selfish, lazy, entitled, and everything is about us, especially when it comes to young girls. While this may be true to a certain extent (even though the same was probably said about their generation), there is just something about the young girls of our generation, and their love for taking selfies that drives older generations nuts. So, there is only one thing left to say to all the young girls that take selfies whenever they're feeling good about themselves.
Keep. Taking. Selfies.
Selfies, believe it or not, are a form of self-love. It sounds crazy, due to all the young girls that get called self-absorbed and narcissistic, vain, and desperate. But no one ever stops to question why it is that girls who take photos of themselves are called these horrible things.
What is so bad about a girl enjoying the way she looks? What is wrong with a girl wanting to snap a photo on a day she feels extra confident? And why is it so bad when she wants to show off how good she looks? When did being confident and happy with yourself become desperate and vain?
The Selfie Generation is a great generation. Sure, there might be a few exceptions—when aren't there? But the fact that girls nowadays are confident enough in themselves to say, "I look good," is enough to realize that maybe taking selfies isn't such a bad thing after all.
It's as if the young girls of the Selfie Generation are hated so much, because society and older generations expect women and girls to hate themselves. There are so many songs and quotes that talk about how beautiful a girl is when she doesn't know it. Men and women think just like this too, because there are so many men and even older women who, as soon as a girl realizes her value and realizes how beautiful she is and owns it, call these same girls ugly and stuck up.
We don't want to tear down the self-esteem of young girls; we want to build it so high, there is never a chance of knocking it down again. Making fun of girls for taking pictures and being happy with the way they look is one way to make sure that never happens, and it needs to stop.
