How To Escape The Winter Blues

The cold will not stop us this year.

It is that time of the year again — the oh- so dreaded winter. At one time or another we all fall into a slump when the weather shifts from the warm summer days to the cold dreary, sometimes snowy days. Winter is in full force, and as the days get shorter and the nights get longer, even the best of us can feel a little down and dull.

It is common for many people to suffer from the “winter blues” or the medical term, seasonal affective disorder (SAD). This is a real disorder that affects the lives of many during the winter season. These individuals are usually irritable, have trouble sleeping and loss of interest to participate in any daily activities.

I think its time we put an end to the winter blues and prevent it from getting the best of us. The winter season should not affect our mood and keep us from being productive. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to embrace the cold and still make the most of this winter season. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Exercise

Ugh, the dreaded word of working out. For many, this may be a scary thought, but there is nothing like a good workout to make you feel alive and well. And by exercising, I do not mean go out and run a half marathon (unless you like to do those sort of things, like my sister), but keep yourself in shape. Exercising can be anything from going on a walk outside if you dare to brace the cold or joining a gym. Attend a spin class, a yoga class or even a zumba class if you like to dance. These are some fun ways to be active without feeling like you are participating in a difficult workout.

2. Watch Movies

Winter is the best time to re-watch your favorite classic movies as well as viewing some new ones that just came out. Snowy days means binge watching movies all day long and not feeling guilty about it. By watching movies in the comfort of your own home, you should totally stay in your pajamas all day and camp out on your couch or stay in bed.

3. Drink Warm Drinks

If you are anything like me, you love to drink coffee, tea or hot chocolate. No better way to start the morning off with a delicious hot beverage. The warm deliciousness will make your insides tingle and get you ready to conqueror your day!

4. Bake Delicious Treats

The cold weather definitely calls for some sweets. There are so many recipes I am sure we are all dying to try so this is the perfect time to put your apron on and get your hands dirty. Whether this means baking some cookies, cakes or pies, this is a way to have some much needed ‘you’ time. And just think, you get to eat the treats when they are ready!

5. Read a New Book

Reading books is a great way to pass some time. Especially when you find a book that is engaging, it may be hard to put it down. You may begin to read and then before you know it, three to four hours went by and you are almost done with the book. With many great pieces of literature you can never run out of options.

6. Online Shopping

The best part about the 21st century is you have the ability to buy almost anything and everything you desire without even leaving your house. Clothes, furniture, kitchen appliances -- the list keeps going. Anything is available to you at your fingertips. So when you are feeling lazy or it is too cold to leave the house, you can still get your shopping done. Or even if you are just having a bad day, nothing a little retail therapy can’t help with.

7. Candles

Since many of us like to stay home instead of welcoming the cold, candles are a great way to keep your house feeling fresh and scented. Sitting in a room with a candle and embracing the aroma, could be a nice stress reliever. These fragrances create a nice, warm and peaceful environment that stimulates our senses.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
