5 Ways To Live Abroad In College

"I want to travel or live abroad, but it's just too expensive." It's actually NOT! I promise!

Throughout my college life, I have lived abroad four times and in three different countries! I'm just an average college student who works part-time and has a great passion for meaningful travel abroad.

If you also are looking for ways to grow and experience new places all while staying on a budget, here are five ways that I (or friends of mine!) have used to make it happen.

1. Worldpackers

Worldpackers is a community based on collaboration and honest relationships that make travel more accessible to those seeking a profound cultural experience.

Through an online platform, they connect travelers - looking to exchange their skills for accommodation - with incredible hosts from all around the world. My friend is moving to Italy for 4 weeks through this program!

2. WWoof

If you're at all interested in agriculture, sustainable farming, or simply just love plants like I do, Wwoof might be a great program for you. World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms is a hospitality service operated by a network of national organizations that facilitate home stays on organic farms.

WWOOF provides volunteers hands-on educational and cultural experiences. My friend went to Ireland through this program and LOVED it.

3. Go Overseas

The mission of Go Overseas is to empower human connection through perspective-changing travel

Go Overseas is a guide to 16,000+ programs that will change how you see the world.

They provide 35,000+ community reviews to help you choose your next adventure and even recommendations on when, where, and how to go overseas.

They provide up to $500,000 in scholarships to fund trips as well. Every one of the programs that they host involves opening your eyes to a new culture and opening your heart to locals and other travelers alike. The world is just a few clicks away!

4. Work Away

Work away is also an international hospitality service that allows members to contact one another to organize homestays and cultural exchange.

Volunteers or "Workawayers", are expected to contribute a pre-agreed amount of time per day in exchange for lodging and food, which is provided by their host.

A good friend went to Peru for a summer this way and had an incredible experience.

5. Staying with friends

This one might be my favorite! One of the most fun and least expensive ways to spend time abroad is to make and visit friends who live overseas.

Joining an international student organization on your college campus or making friends with the people who own your favorite international restaurants are easy ways to get to know people from other places who are living in your city.

You will be able to help them get acquainted with your home and feel welcome. Then, if they decide to return to their home someday, they will almost always be willing to return the favor!

Now there's no excuse to get out and have those incredible, life-changing experiences you've been thinking about. Stay safe out there and have an amazing time. There's nothing to lose and the world to gain.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
