The holiday for romantic love will soon be upon us. For some people, this is a great time to honor their partner, but for those without a romantic interest, it can be lonely or mundane. Here’s a list of ideas of how to have fun on Valentine’s Day without necessitating romantic attachment, whether alone or with friends.
1. Be creative.
You could journal, make some art, play an instrument, or write a poem or song (it is Valentine’s Day, after all). Try a Mad Libs-style poem if you’d rather produce something sour than sweet.
2. Cook or bake.
If you choose not to share, fine. If you do, even better. Bonus: Making food for the rest of the week saves you some time.
3. Sleep.
You know you need it.
4. Volunteer.
Giving back takes the focus off of yourself and puts it on those who can use your help— the pets at the Humane Society, the parents that want a date night, or the neighbor with the neglected yard or snow-filled driveway (just be sure to ask first!).
5. Clean.
This is not the most exciting option, it has to be done sometime. Also, having a clear space is hygienic and keeps you calm.
6. Listen to music.
Whether you’re planning to go to a concert or put in some earbuds, music can help you express whatever you want to feel. Also, you might discover a cool new artist.
7. Host your friends.
You can have a game night, spa night, movie night, or simply time to hang out. Your mood will benefit from being around people who love and care about you, and your single friends will appreciate having fun plans.
8. Read.
For those of us that spend much of our days staring at textbooks, we forget how fun reading can actually be. Grab a blanket and a mug of tea and get lost in a story.
9. Do something active.
No matter if you are outside or inside, your body will appreciate it. Plus, the endorphins don’t feel too bad either.
10. Spend time with family.
Try to find out when they’re available and give them a call or show up if you can. If they’re busy, write a letter to brighten their day.
11. Netflix.
Either you have it or your friends have it. This might be the perfect time to catch up on your favorite show.
12. Go out with friends.
Some options include: the movies, laser tag, the zoo, a museum, dinner, wandering around town, and hiking, or you could find something else that interests you and your group. There’s plenty of fun to be had outside your front door!
February 14 can be fun for single people too! No matter how you choose to spend Valentine’s Day—alone, with friends or family, or with a special someone—find a way to care for yourself and feel the love.
