Valentine's Day Is Over-Rated

I mean, is it even a real holiday?

Valentine's day is a day where couples typically show off their significant other all over social media; posting old throwback photos of each other with lengthy captions about how much they love each other, and how they don't know what they would do without each other, and kissy emojis, blah, blah, blah. But honestly, what's the point? Valentine's day is probably the most silly holiday there is. I mean, is it even a real holiday? And why do we need a holiday to show appreciation for our significant other? Why is this "holiday" only expressed as being a lover's holiday? Why is it that when we go to Walmart to go grocery shopping, we see candles, roses, chocolates, and lingerie all over the front of the stores? Why is it that in middle schools full of children with low self-esteems who are just trying to fit in with the "in crowd" have fundraisers to send flowers to classmates? Why is this holiday encouraged, and romanticized in our society? And why do we let ourselves get so caught up in not having a significant other to share this silly, over-rated “holiday” with? Valentine’s day isn’t everything, it’s not all about the sappy posts or date nights.

Let me just spell it all out for you

Valued - YOU are valuable to your parents, your friends, your family, your significant other, and so many more people.

Appreciated - YOU are so appreciated for all that you do.

Loved- YOU are loved more than you could imagine; love is putting it simply.

Essential - YOU are essential in the lives of those around you.

Needed - YOU are needed, wanted, and cherished.

Talented - YOU are talented, regardless of your rank, your position, your stats, etc.

Impeccable - YOU are impeccable, because there’s no one like you.

Noteworthy - YOU are noteworthy because you are worth getting to know; you are significant.

Empowering - YOU empower those around you, and you don’t even have to try.

'

Smart - YOU are smart, knowledgeable, and heard.

Deserving - YOU are deserving and worthy of love, respect, and and kindness regardless of what you’ve done.

Admired - YOU are admired by many.

Young - YOU are young; don’t let this silly holiday make you wish for a significant other or a date with that boy, or that girl. Your significant other will come when the time is right, and you’re young. So focus on you, your life, and your dreams. Travel. Go to college. Go to that bonfire. Experience life.

Like I said, it’s a silly holiday. But if you spell it out, is it really about a significant other or a sappy post on Instagram? Nope. It’s about YOU.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
