*This is a thank you, and an opinion piece.
In light of the recent election results, I'd like to take this moment and appreciate the University of Washington's campus and everyone who is on it for all that it is worth.
West Coast, Washington, Seattle, UW, I understand that we are grieving. The election wasn't ideal on either end at all, but from my understanding most of us were in agreement of who the lesser evil was. When the president was announced, all I can say is that many of us were shocked. I know I was, and I'm sure many of you were too. It was disheartening to see the downtrodden, sad faces of the students who walked on campus.
But that day, our campus did something rather remarkable. We held a UW in Solidarity right in Red Square to quietly protest the results and stand together as a community. Right now, our nation needs us to stand together now more than ever rather than for a divide and for us to fall apart. The results weren't ideal, but there are what they are.
For all that it's worth, I feel safer on this campus with the results of the election than anywhere else. Yes, there is no denying there are still some scary, irrational people who are taking Trump as president-elect to a concerning level (I'm talking to you-- the guys who drove around spitting and degrading women walking around in the Greek community). I'm just grateful for the fact that most people are this campus are willing to stand together and support one another.
Right now, the world in general needs more people to stand together than falling apart. Support and love travel along way, and I'm beyond appreciative of this campus's ability to do that. It's restored some of my fading faith in humanity. So thank you UW for being the one place to prove that even in the darkest of times, there will always be a small light.
