When we were younger we thought we were on top of the world and we hated when anyone tried to tell us "no." We were our own boss... Or so we thought. Parents always had a way of getting in the middle of things with their annoying responses. Years later, do we still find these things as frustrating as we used to? Probably not. Here are some of my favorite phrases that I hated as a kid.
1. "You can't go outside before you finish your homework."
The absolute worst was being told that you couldn't go outside or hangout with your friends until your homework and studying was done. Now, I have realized that that helped me learn time management and how to handle my priorities in the future.
2. "No texting at the dinner table."
I was the queen of sneaking off to the "bathroom" so that I could text my friends back. Looking back, that was so dumb. The time spent at the dinner table with family is something that you should cherish, your phone will always be there.
3. "I don't care if all of your friends are going."
It was so frustrating to be the one left out or to ruin plans because I couldn't go. It turns out, my parents weren't trying to be dictators, but they were trying to keep me out of trouble.
4. "This is my house."
It was never "our" room, it was their room and so was EVERYTHING in it. Even though I still get told that as a young adult, I now realize that while I'm under their roof, it's their rules.
5. "Because I said so."
I've never grown out of hating this phrase, it still irritates me. However, I use it too when I don't want to be bothered.
6. "I guess you don't have room for dessert then."
FALSE. Dinner food and dessert food go to different places, duh.
7. "When you have kids you'll understand."
I don't have kids, but as I have grown older I have realized that when you love someone, you are always looking out for their best interest, even if they don't think so at the moment.
8. "Don't come into my house like that."
The worst was coming home in a bad mood and trying not to take your attitude out on everyone, but inevitably failing. Sorry mom and dad, mood swings are a killer.
9. "Stop arguing with me."
It was never me arguing, let's just say I was explaining myself... There is a difference (possibly).
10. "Give me your (insert something you cannot live without)."
Punishments were harsh back in the day, but they truly helped me learn discipline and respect-- never thought I would actually say that.
11. "*Screams your first AND middle name."
The absolute worst possible feeling is hearing both of those names yelled up the stairs. In just a few seconds you think of everything you could have possibly done.
Parents have reasons for doing and saying the things that they do. It never seems apparent in the moment, but while reflecting you will truly realize that they are not here to ruin your life. My parents are my number one supporters and best friends. I truly am thankful for my parents and their use of these phrases.
