"The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat", said famous announcer Jim McKay of ABC's Wide World of Sports. This saying is the epitome of the Women's World Cup. This tournament has had everything happen in the sport of soccer that can possibly happen. From the thrill of winning off of penalty kicks after 120 plus minutes of play to the agony of defeat off of an own goal. The best moment of all was the United States becoming winning the title for the first time since 1999 by beating Japan in the final.
This game taking place on Fourth of July weekend really added to the spirit and uplifted our country. The American Outlaws were out in full force making the USWNT feel like they were playing a home game. The "I believe that we will win" cheer and "U-S-A" rang through the stadium while the U.S. was playing at all times.
Now for the game itself; it was definitely one for the record books. Goals started off early with Carli Lloyd in the third minute scoring off of a corner kick. She was not done yet as she had two other goals in just the first 16 minutes. She had the fastest hat trick in FIFA Women's World Cup History. The US team wasn't done there. Lauren Holiday added another goal to make it 4-0. However Japan would not let the U.S. go down without a fight. The final score ended up being 5-2 with Tobin Heath adding the final goal of the tournament for the United States.
Although the offense technically were the reason the U.S. won the final game, the defense was the reason they won the tournament. They were just six seconds away from the new shut out record for the Women's World Cup. They went 540 minutes without conceding a goal.
The US women truly now know the thrill of victory from this year. Abby Wambach playing in her final World Cup was the last woman to receive her medal and one of the first to raise the World Cup trophy. Although she did not play the minutes she wanted to in this tournament she got the result she wanted with the best 22 other players in the world. This is why Wambach is one of the best players and teammates the USWNT has ever seen. Manager Jill Ellis did a great job putting together this team and coaching them through this tournament. She among the players and the rest of the coaches truly deserves this one.
In the past some people have said that women's sports are not exciting to watch. However, if you are even remotely human, your heart goes out a center back from the English team named Laura Bassett after this World Cup. She had an excellent tournament up until the video below. Her team was tied 1-1 with Japan in the semifinal. In the final minutes of stoppage time she was trying to clear the ball from the Japanese player and the worst thing that could happen in soccer happened. Take a look for yourself.
It will take quite a while for her to forget about this game and the outcome. Immediately after the final whistle she broke down into tears and could not compose herself. Her teammates rushed her into the locker room. Other professional athletes and people from all over the globe took to social media to reach out to her as well.
All in all the Women's World Cup was record breaking on so many levels. The beauty of the World Cup is that America was once again brought together after a month filled with devastating loses in the United States. These 23 women not only brought attention to the great sport of soccer it also brought the attention to how American pride is meant to be. They knew they were the best in the world. They just had to prove it. They were not the underdogs in all games, but instead they had to pressure to come out on top. They managed to win every game they played and they managed to bring back the World Cup to the U.S. That third star above the crest on their jerseys was well earned. Congratulations USWNT you inspired me and you inspired a nation. One Nation. One Team. #SHEBELIEVES
