We as Christians often find ourselves comfortable in our faith. Comfortable with our fancy cars, minimal problems, and the way we live our life. Many times I've found that when I am comfortable, my faith is sitting on a plateau. When I am uncomfortable in my faith, those are the moments where I find myself growing in faith.
God calls us to live out our faith at whatever cost. I think we forget that most times because we live in such a material world. When we are sick, there is medicine to cure us. When we are hungry, there is food to feed us, fast food on every corner, and freezer meals in bulk for accessibility. We haven't had to live lives where life is precious. We live lives where we take things for granted. Since we live in these accessible lives, we don't often think in the same way ancient people did. Where if they didn't rely on God, or their faith, they might not have food to put on the table, much less live another day.
How many times have you passed a beggar on the street, without any effort to help them? Most often we avoid those in need because maybe we fear them, or maybe it's an inconvenience to stop and give them our time. Was Jesus the type of person to walk past someone in need, just because He feared the outcome, or was too busy? No.
"Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord." Jeremiah 1:8
Jesus tells us that the moments we are most uncomfortable in our faith, that He is there with us. Most of the time, when we are uncomfortable in our faith – we are living out the truths of our faith. When we stop and buy a beggar a hot meal, we are embodying Christ in the way we are called to.
"Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." Luke 14:12-14
We are not only called to be uncomfortable in our giving but in the way we love others. Our faith is defined by the way we love others through it, those who we may not like, those who are difficult to love. Those are the people we are called to love the most. Those are the people we are called to minister to, and to invest in. Though it may be hard, it is a major portion of our mission.
"And he said to them, "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation." Mark 16:15
So today, make an effort to be uncomfortable in your faith and know God is with you every step of the way.
