Dear You,
I want you to understand me. When I tell you about my likes and dislikes or the things I want and do not want in my life, I do not want you to tell me, "oh that's what you say now, but as you get older you will change your mind". You know what? You are wrong and let me tell you, you are lying to yourself for believing that I will ever be this ideal woman that society wants me to be.
I do not want kids
Yes, I just said that and I have been saying that since I was 8. My mom still does not believe it but since I was 12, 15, and 18 I have been saying this . As a matter of fact now that I'm 20 I still say it whenever we touch upon the subject. She needs to come to the conclusion that my choice in not having kids will not change. And no mom/ relatives I'm not jinxing myself because I'm saying I do not want kids.
Before you begin to say or think that my idea of not wanting kids has to do with the way I grew up, you are wrong. For your information, I grew up surrounded by 2 amazing parents that love me and my sister unconditionally. I also do not hate kids. I love kids and I want to become a teacher, but I just cannot imagine myself being a mother- not now, nor in a few years, just never. I know I will be a perfect aunt or a babysitter if my friends or cousins ever need me to watch their kids. I love Disney movies, going to the park, and I also like playing outside, but having kids is not something that will make me happy. Not every woman needs to have kids in order to be happy. Having children is nice if you want them but it should not be an obligation.
I want tattoos
I know you might think tattoos are ugly. Actually no, I forgot a tattoo on a woman is not attractive, yay to double standards. Look, the truth is there are several woman like me that want tattoos. Some have already gotten tattoos and others like me still have not gotten one because our parents do not want us too. Since I still live with my parents I respect their rules when it comes to tattoos, however, when I no longer depend on them I will get one. No, I will not get one just to be a rebel. I will get one because I think they are cool to have. My first tattoo will be a duck and a swan. The duck is a representation of the ugly duckling. It will be on my wrist to remind me that there will be people that will never think I'm good and they will doubt my skills, but the swan will tell me otherwise. The swan is also to remind me that it is okay to be different even though we are told that the only way to be accepted is if we fit in a box . However, I know that when I get one my relatives and parents may not like it and might criticize me, but that's what happens when you live in a Latino household. Yet, I do ask that my choice of getting a tattoo gets respected.
Lastly,
I do not like parties.
The reality is not every girl likes to party. On occasions, I'll go but chances are I will not dance. I never liked dancing so stop trying to force me to dance. Although, there will be times where I might want to go to a party or dance so take advantage of that, but when I tell you I do not want to go to a party or I do not want to dance do not make me feel like the choices I am making are bad.
Look I know that you mean no harm when you express your concerns or opinions about my life choices. I will listen to everything you have to say even if I may not agree with it yet, even if you may not agree with my choices just nod your head and listen. Try to accept them because I do not question the choices you have made in life. I know that you are happy so that makes me happy. I'll I'm asking for you to do is to not discourage me in being myself instead, be glad that I am finding myself at a young age. An age where it is difficult for young adults to find themselves because we live in a double standard society.
Sincerely,
A girl that says basta ya- no mas.
