With recruitment coming up, I've seen a lot of greek life bashing on social media. Many of these people with strong opinions have never experienced it and mostly get their stereotypes from TV. I promise, it is nothing like you see in the blockbusters. So, what's true and what's not?
1. It's not all about the money
Many people seem to think that sororities, in particular, are all about labels and having the best of the best. While we do like to present ourselves well, many of us are just like everyone else. We're all college kids struggling for cash. Many of my sorority sisters work multiple jobs to pay their fees. Many of us will admit we're not afraid to find a dress at Target for events rather than Lily or Michael Kors.
2. We're not all 5'9 with perfect bodies
This is truly just the most inaccurate piece of information I have ever seen. Sorority girls, just like every human in the world, come in all shapes and sizes. If you take a second to get to know girls in sororities, you would see this as a truth. We have a group of sisters who make us feel confident no matter how we look. We do always strive to be healthy, but that doesn't mean we are skinny as rails and never eat. Us sorority girls surely do love fast food sometimes.
3. We don't all drink and party
Surely, just like anywhere in college, there are sisters who go out and have fun that way. Others like to sit home with their friends and watch movies. Once again, we're not all the same person. It's not like in movies where a bunch of blonde sorority sisters go out and get belligerent. We make sure we are presented in a manner that shows elegance when we're out. We're also really goofy when we're all together and hanging out.
4. Greek Life encourages academic excellence
In my case, being in a sorority actually helped me become more focused in school. My sisters go to the library with me to study. I know that I can call on any of my sisters to help me in classes and they will. We know that learning is important and the whole reason for being in college is to do exactly that. While we love our sisterhood, school comes first!
5. Greek Life gives you connections
Unfortunately, growing up and getting a "real" job is all about who you know. Greek life is a life-long connection that you have to anyone you meet. Being in greek life shows future employers that beyond school, you have learned commitment and cohesiveness. I have learned a lot through being surrounded by over a hundred girls with different views. I learned a lot about communication and presenting myself professionally.
(Some notable sorority alum include: Tory Burch, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Kate Spade, Sheryl Crow, Carrie Underwood, Heather Locklear, Courtney Kupets, and Mary Weber. These women hold many different jobs and found success in many fields.)
Basically, it is unfair to put sorority women all in the same stereotypical group. We are all individuals with different goals and passions. Sisterhood and brotherhood are two of the strongest bonds you can share in life. Whether it's genetic or not, I will always stand up for my sisters. "You can't knock it until you try it," they say. Don't speak out against greek life until you've seen us all come together for one cause and to help other sisters out.
(We love to make friends outside of greek life too!)
