Why Trump's Immigration Ban is Not the Same as Other Presidents' Policies

Over the past two weeks, as Trump has been signing one executive order after other, right-wing supporters has compared his policies with those of past presidents. However, while it may seem that their policies are the same on the surface, we can see that they are completely different when examined carefully.

In 2011, Former President Barack Obama ordered that immigration from Iraq must be slowed down because two men living illegally in Kentucky were bomb makers from Iraq who had ties to terrorist organizations. This action is not the same as Trump's immigration ban from the seven Muslim majority countries because first, President Obama signed the order legislatively not executively. Second, it wasn't a complete ban but rather just a slowing down of the visa process to increase vetting. Third, and most importantly, it was a reaction to a direct and specific terror threat. Trump, on the other hand, just wants to "keep America safe." As a matter of fact, many government officials, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Repubilican John McCain agreed that Trump is making us more vulnerable to attacks from radical Islamist groups because radical Islamist leaders may potentially use Trump's ban as a propaganda to recruit others to their terrorist organizations.

In 1980, Former President Jimmy Carter banned Iranians from entering the United States because Iranian students belonging to the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line took American diplomats hostages. President Carter signed this ban so that it will motivate the Iranian government at the time to release the hostages. Again, Carter's order was a reaction to a direct terror attack.

Former President George W Bush's 2002 "National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS)" was completely unconstitutional. Yet, it was more reasonable than Trump's immigration ban because it was a reaction to the September 11 terrorist attacks and unlike Trump, who is prioritising Christians over Muslim, the NSEERS didn't proritise anyone. It required non-citizens to register when they entered the country and be in contact regularly with immigration. Again, this system of vetting was highly unconstitutional but more practical than Trump's because Trump has absolutely no evidence that we are under a threat or safer with his ban.

So the next time when someone argues that Trump is doing what every other president has done, let's make sure we compare the actual facts and details of their policies.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine.
