In the day I was born, there was no social media to report your views on issues. You had to write your ow views and wait for them to be published in your local newspaper the next day or potentially week. Talk radio wasn't especially as prevalent in the year O.J. Simpson was found innocent in the murder of his ex-girlfriend and Ron Goldman. You had very limited resources to express your views.
Now, in 2016, we have many outlets where your beliefs can be seen and heard all across the world. During the first presidential debate last week Monday, there were plenty of talking heads Tweeting in real time with their analysis of Donald Trump treating this debate as if he were in a remedial English class in 8th grade. More on him later on in this article.
With the varying ways you can express your opinions, which you are entitled to under the First Amendment, you must be self-aware of potential repercussions that may fallout from the expression of said opinion. While our Bill of Rights guarantees our right to free speech, it does not guarantee freedom from consequences. A prime example of this I can think of is the Detroit Lions leaving 97.1 the Ticket for 760 WJR because of the opinions expressed by Mike Valenti. The popular afternoon drive-time host and MSU alum expressed displeasure with the organization and management during both's tenure at WXYT, the former flagship of the Lions. As a result of this, at the end of the contract, the only way the Lions would re-up with the only sports station on your dials was to censor one of its biggest cash cows. CBS radio said, "No," and off The Ticket the Lions were following the 2015 season. They wanted to control the message. The hole was so deep, there was no getting out of it.
Which leads me to the hole Donald Trump continues to dig for himself for the millionth time post debate. Here's the cliffs notes version of it:
- Tweetstorming at 3 a.m., slut-shaming a former beauty queen.
- Calling Miss Machado "Miss Piggy."
- Defending said Tweetstorm with being there to answer 'the call.'
- Being a #TaxDodger since 1995.
- Having his foundation under a 'cease and desist' order.
Damn, quite the rap sheet since getting, as the kids say, owned during the first debate with Hillary Clinton. Of course, you have the right to call her "Crooked Hillary," but I have the equal right to call you an idiot for it. Welcome to 'Murica, Donald.
And you have the unmitigated gall and chutzpah to call soldiers who've suffered PTSD who've died, "not strong?" Given your Tweet attacks rivaled only by tweens after a breakup with their boyfriends, they're a hell of a lot stronger than you ever will hope to be. This is where some self-awareness needs to come into play now, or your party will have to do it for you. Bill Maher lost a TV show for a simple miscommunication of beliefs, calling our government cowardly instead of our soldiers, and you should lose your presidency bid on your clear as day insulting of our vets.
