I went on a hike with an old friend from high school the other day; I met his girlfriend, and we spent some time exploring the trails surrounding a popular ski resort in Washington because she was from California, and anyone visiting Washington from California has to find some time to appreciate how "The Evergreen State" got its name. Anyway, for part of the summer I had been working at this ski resort, and I knew the area well enough to show the two around a little bit. That is all I had spent my summer doing; hiking, exploring, getting away from the world's chaos. I had actually been so far away from the outside world that I had forgotten that most things, especially politics, had existed. For that reason, I was caught off guard when my friend started talking about the elections, feeding me this crazy information about how Trump may or may not be a democratic plant in the election, there with the purpose of destroying the GOP.
I forced myself out of my "I'm in the mountains and nothing else matters" mindset, and took some time to learn about these political shenanigans. I found out the conspiracy started like this: according to the article "Behold the Vast Trump-Clinton Conspiracy" written by David Francis and posted by MSNBC, Carlos Curbelo, the republican United States representative for Florida, made the bold claim on a Miami radio show that "there's a small possibility that this gentleman is a phantom candidate," that Clinton could be working with Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton to undermine the GOP race. What could make people, especially United States Representatives, start thinking this in the first place, though? Well, according to "The Rachel Madden Show" on MSNBC,
"Former president Bill Clinton had a private telephone conversation in late spring with Donald Trump at the same time that the billionaire investor and reality-television star was nearing a decision to run for the White House, according to associates of both men."
The many who see Trump as a democratic plant are jumping to believe that this phone call automatically confirms their hunch that Trump is, in fact, a double-agent for the Left. These individuals believe that Trump is a Republican candidate simply out to destabilize the race, suck up a portion of the GOP base, and then drop out in face of an independent bid. It was even mentioned, on "The Rachel Madden Show," that
"Four Trump allies and one Clinton associate familiar with the exchange said that Clinton encouraged Trump's efforts to play a larger role in the Republican Party, and offered his own views of the political landscape."
Many people believe just this: they believe that Clinton listened to Trump's positions, then expressed his desire to rouse the GOP base. NBC also confirmed that this conversation happened in late May, right before Trump declared his candidacy. I mean, there is a part of the whole thing that makes sense: Trump has always been very close to the Clintons. Trump has donated over $100,000 to the Clinton Foundation, along with donations to Clinton's senate and presidential campaigns. "People" magazine also cited that Hillary Clinton sat at the front row of his wedding. But would a billionaire with an obviously giant ego choose to help a friend over winning one of the highest positions in the world, the US presidency?
I read an article called "The Empire and Ego of Donald Trump" written by Marylin Bender, a journalist for the New York Times. It cited how Trump said he "doesn't like to lose;" and, when asking whether or not he syndicates his deals, he flatly stated, "I don't have to." Trump is a mecca for the world's super rich, one of America's most renown businessmen... for these reasons, and more, I cannot bring myself to believe that helping out the Clintons is higher up on Trump's to-do list than winning the United States' Presidential Elections. Furthermore, I cannot bring myself especially to believe that a person teaming up with the Clintons would call the Mexican immigrants "rapists," as Trump did recently.
Furthermore, Bill Clinton himself is also known for giving people political advice. MSNBC reports him doing the same thing on a separate occasion: he advised Mitt Romney before he spoke at the annual Clinton Global Initiative. Furthermore, a Clinton employee cited that,
"Mr. Trump reached out to President Clinton a few times. President Clinton returned his call in late May. While we don't make it a practice to discuss the President's private conversations, we can tell you that the Presidential race was not discussed."
Whatever the reasons for his candidacy may be, which seem to me to actually be legit rather that conniving, I honestly find all this political drama that Trump's stirring up to be actually hilarious. He has a mysterious phone call with an old friend/well-known democratic politician, he may or may not be running for the sole purpose of bringing the GOP down, he talks about himself in the third person, and it's 2015 and this man is still trying to rock that ridiculous combover.
Perhaps, though, it might be time for America to stop focusing so much on all this political drama and malarkey, and actually start focusing on, you know, politics... Why are we focusing on whether or not Trump is a democratic plant instead of on the fact that he, as a candidate, entirely lacks a political platform? Why is the idea that he might be working with Democrats more alarming than the fact that Trump wants to build an impenetrable wall between America and Mexico and tell the, oh, 11 million estimated Mexican immigrants to deport, but to not worry because, "If they're good," they can come back?
It seems to me that what we need is not answers as to what Trump's intentions are, but perhaps a pull back to the center: we need to stop focusing on the politicians, and focus more on the politics. We need to remember what politics are about, we need to listen to what these candidates are saying , and I mean really listen to what they are saying, and choose which one we believe will bring this almost collapsing country back to its feet. So what if Trump is back at one of his grandiose schemes! We have more important things to worry about, such as stopping Trump from harassing the Mexican Immigrants, and finding a person in the world who wants to be president and can make college education less expensive.
