I've grown up my entire life in a trigger happy society. And maybe this is the American way. That everything is bigger and better and mass-produced with that quality of American ingenuity. This is great and all but I feel as if we have lost touch with the subtleties of what is important for society to thrive in this political climate.
I had a teacher in high school who thought that any argument for gun control was a moot point, or blase, or boring. I think that it is anything other than boring. Actually I don't know how much of a gun issue we actually have here, but I do know that we have a hurt people complex backed by massive weapons and a military fund that could change my bank account significantly.
However, I don't think that this argument should be silenced by a generation that hasn't had to deal with much of the effects of it. Meaning, if you can't name someone around you that has been killed or injured by the neglect of gun violence then you probably shouldn't have an opinion on the issue. In plain terms, you cannot invalidate the experience of an individual because of your fear of material loss.
Besides the fact, I don't believe that anyone is trying to get rid of guns. I have family members who are very responsible in their gun ownership --meaning they don't have a crazy background, they are sane, and they have training and legal ownership. Crazy how not everything has to be obtained under the table --but to imagine a world with regulations and guidelines is what we're all trying to ask for.
It's one of those things that isn't a boring argument. I think that we need to find time to talk about violence and discourse in our country. This is a conversation with a fix that is larger than "please let me keep my heavy, duty assault weapon because God gave me this right." Like we are losing our children. I think that's something to march over.
I'll get behind a movement that is down for saving lives. Movements like this and BlackLivesMatter are something that we need to discuss colloquially --and they shouldn't simply be bandwagon tactics. These are real people we are discussing, and these are real lives we are preventing from being taken. Thus, these are more than mere political statements --these are pleas for help.
This is our current generation crying out for guidance and something to grasp onto. Because we're begging for protection here.
We use our voices to protect each other, our arms to love each other, and our hands to build.
