I've realized that no adult actually knows what they're doing. Everyone is just kind of guessing. Assuming that whatever decision they make won't be fatal or dangerous to anyone's well-being. I'm just now figuring out how to become an adult. Let me share a bit of what I've learned so far.
1) You need a job or two.
If you're living on your own, you're going to need a job...or two. I am currently working two part-time jobs, and it is not easy. But, it is what you can do if you are also going to school.
2) Clean up your social media.
Cleaning up your social media is an important step in your transitioning adult life. Employers will likely look at your profiles and judge you accordingly. Get rid of your 16 year old photoshoot pictures.
3) Figuring out what to eat is hard.
I've learned that pastas and soups are the cheapest meals, and it'll last you a while. I know, these might not be the healthiest choices, I'm just saying how it is. I know that most students who are transitioning into adulthood only eat a meal a day or so, so buy what you can get the most out of. One day, we will be able to eat full, healthy meals. Just do what you can.
4) Essentials are expensive.
You just don't fully understand what it's like to buy all of your essentials until you have to. Toothpaste, tampons, bread, etc. costs more than you would originally imagine, so budget for those kinds of things.
5) Get a roommate.
Cut down on the price of your living situation with someone you like. It's such a beneficial situation, to get a roommate, so you can both not know what to do, but pretend like you know.
6) The little things matter.
Someone pays for your meal? Your roommate washes the dishes? These things matter.
7) A little bit can go a long way if you try hard enough.
Stretch what you can. Know the value of a dollar and stretch it as far as you can. We will get out of this weird stage of life at some point.
8) Don't be fake.
Don't say things you don't mean. Those things will come back to haunt you. Don't lie, don't cheat, don't exaggerate on your resume.
9) Wearing black is almost always appropriate.
The easiest, and ultimately best looking outfits are all black. Don't wear all black to a wedding or anything, though.
10) Remember, no one knows what they're doing.
We are all just guessing. From the 20 year olds, to the 72 year olds. No one fully understands how to do things.
Adulthood is a scary but also fun time. Life is a learning experience for all of us, so hopefully this list can help you out!
