Trade Ideas For The Winter Meetings

The Winter Meetings are upon us. That means the hot stove that is the baseball off-season is about to heat up even more. The Tigers got things rolling over a week ago with the first major signing of the off-season, inking starter Jordan Zimmermann to a five year deal. A few days later the Red Sox claimed the biggest free agent prize, handing David Price a seven year deal for $217 million. Then the Diamondbacks shocked the baseball world by snatching Zack Greinke away from division rivals the Dodgers and Giants.

That is just the tip of the iceberg, however. These next few days that are the Winter Meetings are typically the most hectic and fun of the off-season. There will be free agent signings. There will be trades. And most of all, there will be rumors. Lots and lots of rumors.

As a baseball fan, these tend to be the most exciting days of the long winter. Thinking of possible trade ideas are one of the ways a baseball fan like myself can handle not actually having baseball games to watch. So here are five trade ideas I think could work for all teams involved that could theoretically go down over the next few days at the Winter Meetings down in Nashville, Tennessee.

DBacks add a young arm to the rotation for young position players, plus a bad contract swap.

Braves get: 3B Jake Lamb, OF Ender Inciarte, 2B Aaron Hill
Diamondbacks get: SP Shelby Miller, OF/1B Nick Swisher

Shelby Miller’s name has been a hot one when it comes to trade rumors. The Cubs and Dbacks have been linked to him the most, as both teams look to add young controllable arms. The Braves seek a young controllable position players in return for the three years of Miller. While the Cubs could offer Javier Baez or Jorge Soler, I think the DBacks get the deal done.

The Braves really want outfielder AJ Pollack from Arizona, but Arizona would be crazy to part with the young star. However, pairing Lamb with Inciarte should be an intriguing enough package. Inciarte offers a 25 year old outfielder with five seasons of control. That fits perfectly with what the Braves seek. Lamb offers another 25 year old with five seasons of control, and he could be the third baseman of the future for Atlanta. He has a great bat and slots right into the Braves lineup.

Miller would be a great add to the rotation in the desert behind Greinke. He would become their number two starter, and like I mentioned earlier, has three years of control left.

Hill and Swisher would be included as sort of a bad contract swap. Hill has one year on his deal while Swisher has one plus a vesting option. Swisher is owed more money of the two, but the Braves will be happy that they won’t have to worry about paying him in 2017, even if they need to throw in some money for this season, which I think is a possibility. This is because the Braves are opening a new stadium in 2017, and it’s possible they want as much cap space as possible for next offseason.

Hill is not going to start in Arizona, but the Braves could decide to start him if they felt he was better than Jace Peterson. The DBacks could lose two potential starters in Lamb and Inciarte, but Yasmany Tomas easily fills one of the two holes without issue. If Tomas is put at third, Swisher could start in the outfield if Arizona wanted to go that route. More likely though they would sign or trade for a cheap and more reliable starter at third or the outfield.

Blue Jays continue to upgrade the rotation.

Blue Jays get: SP Danny Salazar
Indians get: OF Dalton Pompey, SP Drew Hutchinson

The Blue Jays have spent most of the off-season adding pieces to their rotation. They have already re-signed Marco Estrada, traded for Jesse Chavez and signed JA Happ. Bottomline, the Blue Jays have clearly been on a mission to upgrade the rotation, as David Price is no longer in town. The Jays also happen to have a logjam in the outfielder with Kevin Pillar, Ben Revere and Dalton Pompey fighting for two spots.

So the Jays could very well pair one of those outfielders to help upgrade elsewhere. Pompey may be the most attractive option to other clubs, given he will have plenty of years of control and he was seen as one of the Blue Jays best prospects when last season started.

The Indians need some help on offense, especially in the outfield, with star outfielder Michael Brantley being questionable to start next season due to injury. Before the Brantley news, the Indians were already light in the outfield and will definitely need to add someone to man one of the three spots out there.

The Indians also happen to have a surplus of starting pitching, with Salazar, Carlos Carrasco and Trevor Bauer all mentioned in trade rumors. So the Jays and Indians could easily line as trade partners. The Blue Jays upgrade a piece of the rotation by replacing Hutchinson with Salazer, while the Indians add a young outfielder with plenty of upside as well as a capable starter to replace Salazar.

Boston continues to overhaul its roster with an All-Star catcher.

Red Sox get: C Jonathan Lucroy
Brewers get: OF Jackie Bradley Jr or SP Henry Owens, C Blake Swihart

Dave Dombrowski is putting his stamp on the Red Sox, already adding stars Craig Kimbrel and David Price. And the thing is, he still has a ton of trade chips to work with if he chooses. The Red Sox could go in so many different directions for this very reason. So while catcher is not necessarily a true need, Dombrowski could pull the trigger at the right deal.

The Brewers are a team in rebuild mode, which means they will look to add young and controllable pieces. Jonathan Lucroy is one of several veteran players who could be moved. The Brewers could use upgrades in the rotation, third base, and several other spots.

Putting Swihart in the deal makes sense as he steps right in at catcher for the Brewers. I would think for two years of Lucroy, another young MLB ready player would be enough when paired with Swihart. Jackie Bradley Jr is even more expendable after the Red Sox added Chris Young for outfield depth. The Brewers could use a true center fielder like him so they can shift Domingo Santana, who isn’t a true center fielder. The Brewers could also really use a young arm, and Henry Owens definitely fits that bill. So I think a Lucroy to Boston deal could work with several different packages. If I was Milwaukee I would be happy with either of those names paired with Swihart.

Mets get their big name outfielder to replace Cespedes.

Mets get: OF Carlos Gonzalez
Rockies get: SP Steven Matz, SS Wilmer Flores, C Kevin Plawecki

The Mets need a big bat to replace Yoenis Cespedes. I think that big bat currently calls Colorado home. The Mets have been linked to Carlos Gonzalez in years past, so why not now? The Mets have the young pieces the Rockies would desire to part with their star player. CarGo gets hurt a lot, but he is an all-star talent when healthy.

The Rockies need a young talented starter added via trade, because no star pitcher is going to sign to pitch in Coors Field. Enter Steven Matz. Matz got his first taste of the big leagues last season, and showed plenty to believe he can be a solid MLB starter. He could be replaced by Zach Wheeler in this deal, but I would imagine the Rockies will prefer Matz. The Mets' strength is pitching, so dealing one of their young arms in a deal like this is a must.

Wilmer Flores is a guy who could replace Jose Reyes, whose future is in question after reports of a domestic assault this off-season, at short in Colorado. Putting his bat in Coors Field could prove to be a very solid move. We know the Mets are open to moving him, thanks to the Carlos Gomez deal that fell apart last season.

Kevin Plawecki does not have a place to play in New York right now. Travis D’arnaud is entrenched at catcher for years to come for the Mets, so why not use Plawecki and his potential as a trade chip. Nick Hundley is the starter in Colorado, and he is not a long term answer. Plawecki could become the Rockies catcher of the future if the Rockies finally decide it is time to move CarGo. And guess what Colorado - it is in fact time.

Astros get their closer after missing out on Chapman.

Astros get: CL Ken Giles
Phillies get: OF Jake Marisnick, OF Preston Tucker

Closers are wild this off-season. There are tons of them on the market via trade, and several teams looking to upgrade their bullpens. The biggest name that was available was Aroldis Chapman, who is now a member of the Dodgers. The most intriguing name available is the Phillies’ Ken Giles, due to age, potential, and having five years of control.

The Astros are said to be hell-bent on getting a closer, and Chapman topped their list before he was sent West. They also have been linked to Giles. They are open to moving young outfielder Jake Marisnick, as he currently does not have a spot to play. Pairing him with a prospects seems like it is a fair price for five year of Giles.

The Phillies will clearly look to get young and controllable players if they move Giles, who they feel they can replace. Marisnick would slot right into their outfield as a 24-year-old former top prospect moving into a hitter-friendly park. The move could be what Marisnick’s career needs. Tucker is probably the Astros’ top OF prospect, also has potential to slide right in and start for Philly. Philly reportedly has interest in the Astros’ young arms like like Lance McCullers, who I do not think Houston wants to move. If getting Giles changes their mind however, he could theoretically replace someone like Tucker in this deal.

So what do you think? Who will be moved during the Winter Meetings? What are some potential deals you would propose?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
