It’s been almost three years since Frozen first premiered and the Frozen trend is still going strong. In a matter of speaking, one of the reasons that the movie became such a hit sensation among the general public was the music. You would be hard pressed to find someone who has not yet heard “Let it Go.”
Although, some will find it hard to admit, listening to Disney princess song is a guilty pleasure. From Cinderella’s “Bippity Boppity Boo” to Tangled’s “When Will my Life Begin” Disney has kept on with the consistently good quality of princess movie music.
However, while Disney is particularly renowned for their princess movies, they have put out a fair number of movies that don’t involve royalty. These movies have also featured stellar musical hits, and some have been more underappreciated than others. While this list is highly suggestive- and please feel free to disagree with me- these are my top five underrated Disney songs from non-princess movies.
5. We Are One - The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride
This song brings us back to what made The Lion King an instant classic. It features a strong tribal harmony and has a particularly strong focus on the drums and flutes playing in the background. The song is about Simba telling his daughter Kiara how important family means to him. It feels almost reminiscent of the scene in the original Lion King where Mufusa tells Simba about the Great Kings of the past.
4. Summer Belongs to You - Phineas and Ferb: Across the Second Dimension
Listening to this song will make anyone long for those carefree days of summer vacation back in childhood. Anyone may find themselves singing this song in their head as the countdown to the weekend toils down. It’s very enthusiastic and energetic, while caring with it a soothing quality. The song is about Phineas and Ferb telling their second dimension selves the joys of summer.
3. Your Heart Will Lead You Home - The Tigger Movie
Ever heard of saving the best for last. Well, it’s evident that the creators of The Tigger Movie did. You Heart Will Lead You Home sung by Kenny Loggins is the featured song in the end credits. It about sums up the emotional roller coaster that the movie takes us through. The song makes us long to catch up with long lost friends and reminds us that no matter what, we are never alone when we have friends who care about us.
2. Why Should I Worry - Oliver and Company
I personally find it hard to believe that some people have never heard of this movie before. It’s a feel-good movie that takes its audience through one kitten’s journey to find his forever home. This song immerses its audience with an upbeat lyrical harmony, providing perhaps one of the best character introductions in Disney movies.
1. Eye to Eye - A Goofy Movie
There is nothing wrong with a good, upbeat pop song. This song is a perfect example of the pop music of the 90’s. It’s passionate with the perfect blend of guitars, drums, base and vocals. It features Disney’s renowned character Goofy with his young, teenage song Max. The song serves as the climactic scene in the movie where both father and son are able to look past their differences and understand each other, while singing along with Powerline at a Los Angles concert.
