As spring begins to emerge the flowers bloom and the birds begin to chirp, but more importantly people gather in the biggest cities all over the world to witness the fashion that they'll be wearing for the coming months. People rush to the fashion shows and sip champagne as they watch the wispy models strut down the run-in beautiful silk, satin, and lace garments.
Each year I've sat and watched the live-streams of the shows and dreamed about the day when I could attend them in person; well at least until this year. As spring break rolled around, I was one of the lucky few chosen to work Charleston Fashion Week. For five days, I watched the shows and witnessed the top designers that I feel sure we'll be seeing this year on college campuses. The following are my top picks to watch out for in the coming seasons.
1. Storm Dorris
An emerging designer that will definitely be influencing formal dresses through the coming year, Storm Dorris used tulle and textured patterns to create looks straight out of the fairy-tales. She took the sheer look from the past year and incorporated more depth with jagged layers of tulle and balanced it with floral beading. Definitely look for soft neutral colors to take the forefront for this spring. So go ahead and hang up the bright yellows, blues and pinks of formal dresses past and look for something with a more whimsical texture. One more tip, maybe pair it with a dark metallic heel and minimal accessories to balance it out. I can promise this look will be the center of everyone's attention.
2. JD Noble
Another fabulous look for more formal events is the pants/dress look. Bringing the two together adds a more professional look to a feminine outfit proving you can be the boss and still look like a star. While this may not be something students wear around campus it's definitely a style to admire and watch for on the runway.
3. Carolina Hulsey
Finally, a designer that works comfort into her styles. One thing that caught my eye with her collection was how comfortable and applicable it looks for everyday where. From the office, to the bar, to running to my car in the famous April Showers, this collection works for everything. Her use of neutral colored crochets in her dresses, paired with uncomplicated accessories like this mustard rain jacket brings a lighter spring look to the outfit without it looking like an Easter egg. Paired with buckled flats and minimal make-up, the dress speaks for itself and gives off an effortlessly polished look. We can expect to see similar looks anywhere from summer internships to the beach.
4. Ike Behar
Okay guys, this one's for you. It's time to put the mundane black and navy jackets away and add a pop of color to the summer internship suits. While I don't recommend showing up to the office in flip-flops, there's something to be said about the colorful satin jackets. Paired with a printed shirt and neutral pants, this look gives off a polished yet unique vibe that will be sure to leave a positive first impression on a boss.
5. Lauren Stilwell
This look is one of my absolute favorites. Pairing the comfort of Converse with a jersey dress, a graphic print, and a stylist coat and bag can make even the laziest of college students look put together. It also doesn't hurt that her models rocked the go-to half-bun. Look for similar styles of mixing workout wear with stylish pieces for a killer casual vibe.
6. Samantha De La Fuente
This designer slayed. With a mixture of suede, leather and fringe it won't be long until this style creeps into the Tavern and Apple Annie's. Instead of the overwhelming amounts of sheer fabric that've been seen through the past year, I suspect we'll be seeing more of this. Say goodbye to pulling skirts down and tops up ladies; replacing sheer fabric with bits and pieces of skin will make any look appear more modest while giving it a sexy undertone perfect for the clubs and bars.
7. Lilly Pulitzer
Everyone's favorite. This season Lilly will be focused on more neon colored prints with silk materials and gold undertones. With a dress like this who needs anything else?
8. House of Sage
With summer just around the corner, look for bikini's with designer prints and the classic higher neckline. But, House of Sage has put a twist on the last season fave. By making the bottom more curved it gives the appearance of a perkier bust and who doesn't want that? Look for more brightly colored swimsuits with nude accessories. After all we're all wishing for an Indian summer right?
9. Bridal House Charleston
Now that spring has arrived, wedding bells will be soon to follow. With that in mind, this season's bridal designs are focusing more on soft textures with whimsical embellishments. While many brides look for white dresses, having a dress with more color like the one above adds a softer look to the bride overall. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea it's definitely something to look into.
Overall, look for warm neutrals with the occasional pop of color. As for accessories I predict a continuation of the nude leathers and suedes that have been present in the past year. With these suggestions in mind I look forward to seeing how all of you find your own way to rock these styles with your own personal touches.
