The women of 2016 really made this year special. Although, in some aspects the world has gone backwards, but some have also gone forward. 2016 brought us our first woman that was nominated for President and Lady Gaga coming at us with so much truth. These women created a better place for our future daughters and sisters to grow and continue to break the gender barriers.

1. Michelle Obama

Mrs. Obama brought so much strength to America, but not just to this country, but to women, and then not just women, but women of color. She is strong and independent and can stand on her own, while still being the wife of the President of the United States. She is kind and cares for children and their livelihood.

2. Amy Schumer

We have had so many women in the spotlight for weight and learning to love your body. But there's something about Amy that just makes it so real. She wasn't afraid to write her book or post her photos of her "plus size" body. She proves that women should love their bodies no matter what the shape may be.

3. Hillary Clinton

Some may object to this one, but before you can say anything, let's agree that she fought such a great fight. She continued to fight for what she believed in and didn't back down until the end. She had a lot of guts to run for President and was able to break through the first layer of glass and become the first nominated woman to run for POTUS.

4. Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga said she wouldn't do music because she was just there to make money. That is a huge deal considering she probably loves to sing and perform, and because of our society she doesn't want to do what she loves. She has come back to music and brought us great and lyric worthy songs and performances. She is a strong and talented women that inspires people to be how they were born. How they see themselves is who they truly are.

5. Simone Biles

She won five medals in her Olympic career and that's not the end of her. She is a fighter and she continues to amaze us. She is such a great advocate to show young girls that they too are capable of doing so much in the world.

There are many more women in the world that have created a better environment for the future and today. These women have made the impossible possible.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from.
