Life can be very confusing. Sometimes it is impossible to figure out what we should be doing, especially when you're in college, trying to balance classes, clubs, jobs, etc. There are so many things swirling around you and everyone you know (including yourself) is drowning in responsibilities and extracurriculars. But whenever I feel overwhelmed, I like to think about some very important lessons that I have learned in my life so far.
1. You’re just one person. Do what you can.
When there are so many activities you want to participate in and classes you want to take, it can be difficult to narrow it down. Remember that, while you are strong and special, there is only one of you. You are limited edition in the greatest way, but that means there’s also a limit on what you can handle. You can’t accomplish everything, no matter how badly you want to. Spread your classes evenly throughout semesters so they are challenging, but not impossible. When choosing activities to participate in, pick the ones you are most passionate about and will put your best effort into.
2. Not everyone is going to like you.
Again, this is something you may so badly want. However, out there, somewhere, there is someone who does not see a part of you or you as a person as their cup of tea. And you know what? You’re still moving along in life just fine.
3. You don’t have to follow the path of your parents.
Both of my parents told me they were registered Republicans, and when I was younger (and knew little to nothing about politics), I would just say that I also identified as a Republican because, well, that’s what my parents were. I had no idea what the hell that meant. As I moved through high school and college and immersed myself more in political culture, I realized I am definitely the opposite of what I always claimed to be. Yes, you are the offspring of your parents, but that also means you are an individual with your own thoughts, feelings, opinions, and beliefs.
4. You really should not pay attention to the number on the label.
I’m telling you, I’ve been a size 12 at one store and a size 6 at another. It all depends on the make and style of the clothes. You are gorgeous. I know I felt hotter than ever in that size 12 dress.
5. Always try to be kind.
That kid who always gets on your nerves? He might be bullied and feel like you are the only person that will listen to him. Someone was rude to you? It’s important to defend yourself, but be assertive in doing so, not aggressive.
6. If you’re in a relationship, remember to enjoy a little “me” time once in a while.
Having a significant other can be a fantastic thing. It’s having a best friend who will support and love you. Your relationship is just a part of your life though. Take yourself out on a coffee date one afternoon. Binge-watch vines with your best friend. Enjoy being with yourself just as much as you enjoy being with that other person.
7. Don’t be afraid to raise your hand.
Everyone is familiar with that cringe-y feeling of having a burning question but being too nervous to ask it in front of the entire class because you think you should know the answer. Think about how much college tuition is. The professor is paid to stand in front of the class and answer exactly what you are afraid to ask. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been too nervous to ask a question, but nearly slumped in relief in my chair because the person next to me asked the same one.
8. If you want seconds, go for seconds.
It is not going to kill you. It is not a demon – it is the beautiful creation that is pizza. There’s always plenty of time to go for a run tomorrow.
9. If you have a free night and the money, go to a concert.
Even if you’ve never heard of the band that’s playing, a concert is like an investment in an experience. There’s something about live music and gathering everyone together, that takes your mind off things and can be quite freeing. The best nights of my life have been seeing my favorite bands in the flesh while singing along horrendously with my friends.
