The NFL football season is just around the corner, and the NFL is going to allow for alternative helmets to be used in 2022. This is incredible for all 32 teams because it will do-away with the "one-helmet rule." What would be incredible is if the teams utilized their throwback helmets, especially during one of the biggest NFL seasons yet. Because of this potential excitement, and some of the teams already planning to use throwback threads, I listed below my top 5 favorite throwback helmets that the respective teams should use for the upcoming season.
5. Retro is Better - Indianapolis Colts
When I think retro Colts, I'm referring to the 1995 Colts. People don't think that their uniform was - well - the nicest during that season, however, I disagree. Something about the throwback look of the Indianapolis Colts was iconic. It was simple, white and blue, and it worked. Obviously it worked well if this uniform is basically the basis of what they use today.
4. Classic Oilers - Houston Texans
Something about the simplicity and absolute awesomeness that is the Houston Oilers helmets is what does it for me and why they're on this list. That, and the history the helmet holds is incredible enough to make a comeback for this upcoming season. Not sure how doable it would be, but it would be cool to see the Texans rocking their roots of the Houston Oilers.
3. Patriotic Pride - New England Patriots
The 1960s Patriots helmet is simple, but real grand in its appearance. The color scheme almost resembles the Oilers helmets, but with the New England Patriots, it just makes sense. Do we see these helmets making a comeback? I sure hope so. How would we have felt to see Tom Brady in this classic 60s helmet?
2. Kelly Green - Philadelphia Eagles
The classic Kelly green uniforms are ICONIC. As an Eagles fan, I NEED the entire uniform to make a comeback - but the helmets are a good enough start. This helmet is striking and serves as good of a threat as the players on the team who got to sport these awesome green threads. With all the moves happening in the Eagles for the upcoming season, I hope that allowing for the throwback helmets are one of those moves.
1. Creamsicle > Everything Else - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
It's threatening. It's iconic. It's a delicious citrus and vanilla combo. Call it whatever you want, but the creamsicle helmets that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sported on the field are incredible and absolutely need to make a comeback. On the history of this great color combo, the team decided on these colors for the following reasons: "Orange was a natural choice because of the area's citrus industry and the warmth of Florida's sunshine. Red, too, is warm and lively. In heraldry, it is symbolic of courage and fortitude in battle."
