Rivalry's are part of sports and baseball continues to have them. A rivalry can start with a postseason series, being in the same division or an altercation on the field. My top five most historic rivalry's all of time happened through some type of altercation. Here are my top five most historic baseball rivalries.
5. The battle of Chicago - Cubs vs. White Sox
For many years these two foes have squared off against each other. Both teams play in the city of Chicago so the city is divided into north and south sides. Cubs fans don't like the White Sox and the White Sox fan's do not like the Cubs. Both teams have passionate fan basses and believe that they are the number one team in Chicago. A World Series meeting could end this debate of who is the better team in the windy city.
4. St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds
In the last decade, both the Cardinals and Reds have battled for the NL Central crown. This rivalry reached it peak in 2010 when Reds second baseman, Brandon Phillips did not like Cardinals catcher, Yadier Molina for a comment he made about his team just a day before. Before Phillips 1st at bat he started to talk to Molina and the two started to yell at each other. Both benches cleared and now both teams hate each other. Both teams see each other a lot because they play in the same division and another altercation could be brewing.
3. The Subway Series - Yankees vs. Mets
In the big Apple, There are two teams that want to be on top of New York. With The Yankees having 27 World Series titles and the Mets having just two, it's clear who the king of the city is. The Mets and Yankees have met in the word series and the Yankees have the upper hand. Just like the Cubs and White Sox, both the Mets and Yankees fans hate each other.
2. Dodgers vs. Giants
With both teams in the NL west, these teams have had many meetings against each other. Both teams have been rivals since the 1890s in the first 70 years of the rivalry. The Dodgers were in Brooklyn and the Giants were in Manhattan. This was the real reason why both teams did not like each other and in the late 50s both teams moved out west to California which really made the rivalry the way it is now in 2016.
1. Boston vs. New York
Boston and New York continue to have the debate, who has the better sports town. The Yankees and Red Sox rivalry is the best rivalry in all of sports and will continue to be. For years the Yankees beat the Red Sox but in 2004, the Sox finally got over the hump and beat the Yankees. Ever since the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry hasn't been the same. One altercation or a postseason series could get the rivalry back to where it used to be.
